The 28-year-old Lopez might as well have painted a “Hit me” sign on his flabby stomach because that’s where Canelo Alvarez will no doubt be aiming a significant amount of his shots tonight. You have to assume that the 22-year-old Alvarez was already planning to be going to the body a lot against Lopez due to his constantly moving style of fighting.

For a guy as mobile as Lopez you have to aim for his body to increase your chances of landing the shots and also to get him to sop moving so much. But Lopez seems to have done a lot of the work for Alvarez by eating himself from 140 to 153 lbs with much of it being fat around his midsection.

It was already going to be a near hopeless situation for Lopez to begin with because he last fought in June in a welterweight fight where he weighed in at 144 lbs, and was going to have to try and bulk up as quickly as possible to fight Alvarez on September 15th. Lopez has bulked up just fine, but unfortunately a lot of that bulk is around his midsection which is kind of useless for him.

What Lopez needs to be able to do tonight in order to win the fight is to hit and move constantly. That’s the only way he can beat Alvarez, but I don’t think Lopez can with all that flab he’s carrying around his waist. He’s simply too fat now.
