What next for Saul Alvarez?

Image: What next for Saul Alvarez?(Photo credit: Leopoldo Gonzalez) By Mark Havey: On account of his cinnamon coloured hair, he is affectionately referred to as “Canelo” by his legion of Mexican fans. Saul Alvarez retained his WBC light middleweight belt last night by destroying Josesito Lopez in 5 rounds. Canelo seemed comfortable throughout the right. Lopez was the opposite. Body shots were clearly breaking his spirit and the combinations he found flying at his head made it clear he was in the wrong fight.

Alvarez has his mind set on greatness, but what is next for him? I would love to see him face Cotto. This would establish him as a true force in boxing. Cotto gave Mayweather trouble in his last fight. If Alvarez could stop Cotto he would place the world at his feet. There are no other fights at 154 lbs for Canelo. Nothing interesting anyway.

Canelo can’t move down, but I think he can move up in weight. The possible fights at middleweight are irrefutably appealing. He could face off against Chavez Jr. This would be a good fight for both men. They would both like each others scalp and all the bragging rights that entail with that triumph. Felix Sturm is a fight that should be a sure win for Alvarez. Dmitry Pirog and Daniel Geale would be good wins. Of course the biggest possible win at this weight would be Sergio Martinez. Is this to soon? Perhaps. But it isn’t far off. Alvarez would put up a better fight than what Chavez Jr did. The fight is realistic and I think will happen as long as Martinez doesn’t retire within the next year.

Saul Alvarez should keep the momentum going and get back into the ring soon. The fight didn’t take it out of him so he may get another fight in this year. It would be nice if he was matched against Cotto or Chavez. But I have a horrible feeling he will a mediocre opponent.
