Amir Khan vs. Josesito Lopez still in play

lopez112By Scott Gilfoid: It was thought that welterweight Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) was out of the running for a bout against former IBF/WBO light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) for the end of April, but Lopez’s promoter Ken Thompson is saying that he’s still looking to make fight with Khan.

Thompson told esnewsreporting.com “It’s on its way right now. I’ll be put together.”

I’ve got a couple of thoughts here on this. Khan reportedly wants Lopez to drain down to 140 or near 140 to make that fight. Lopez is now a welterweight, and not a particularly strong one at that.

Maidana vs. Lopez close for April 20th

maidana32434By Dan Ambrose: A fight between welterweight contenders #2 WBA, Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) and #14 WBC, Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) is close for April 20th, according to Steve Kim. Stephen Espinoza of Showtime says the Maidana-Lopez is a real possibility for the April 20th date on Showtime, and Abner Mares is a possibility to fight on that date as well.

Lopez, 28, attracted attention last year in June when he stopped former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz in the 9th round. Lopez moved up from light welterweight to take that fight, and not much was expected of him. However, he went toe-to-toe with Ortiz and got the better of him through much of the fight.

Khan unable to agree on catchweight for Josesito Lopez bout

khan34By Scott Gilfoid: Negotiations with the recently knocked out Josesito Lopez has fallen apart with former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan after Lopez reportedly had zero interest in draining down to close to 140 in order to make the catchweight that Khan wanted, according to the mirror.co.uk.

Lopez, who previously fought at 140, is now campaigning as a welterweight and it would be too hard for him to drain down to fight Khan close to the 140 pound division. As such, the 32-year-old Humberto Soto is now looking like the guy that will be facing Khan now. Golden Boy Promotions just needs Showtime to say yes to Soto as an opponent.

Marcos Maidana vs. Josesito Lopez a possibility

lopez324By Allan Fox: A fight between former WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) and Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) is being discussed by Golden Boy Promotions, according to Steve Kim. There’s no date yet for the fight, but given that both of them haven’t fought in 2013 yet, it would have to be soon.

Maidana, 29, destroyed Angel Hernandez by a 3rd round knockout in December in an easy tune-up fight in Buenos Aires, Argentina, whereas Lopez hasn’t fought since last September when he was blown out by the much stronger, if not bigger, WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Khan to fight Cano, Soto, Lopez or Senchenko on April 20th

khan222By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KO’s) has four possibilities for his upcoming April 20th fight, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. If Khan fights in the United States on that date, which doesn’t look like it’s going to happen, Khan will be fighting the recently knocked out Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s).

If Khan fights in the UK, Khan will be fighting one of three following opponents: Vyacheslav Senchenko (33-1, 22 KO’s), Humberto Soto (59-8-2, 34 KO’s) or Pablo Cesar Cano (25-2-1, 19 KO’s).

Since it doesn’t look like the fights going to take place in the U.S, you can pretty much eliminate Lopez from the list right off the bat. Anyways, it doesn’t matter even if he still was on the list because he just got trounced by WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez in his last fight and it looks silly that he’s on Khan’s list.

Khan looking at Senchenko, Ortiz and Lopez for April fight

khan45By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) is expected to announce his April opponent this week, and he’s talking about picking from one of three fighters: Josesito Lopez, Victor Ortiz and Vyacheslav Senchenko. The good news is those guys are not lightweights like Khan’s last opponent Carlos Molina. The bad news is two of those fighters are coming off of losses in which they didn’t perform well.

Khan said to Sky Sports “Josesito Lopez, Victor Ortiz, Senchenko, the guy that beat Ricky Hatton. There are few names that we have been put there…Whoever they find for me, we’ll find out in the next couple of days.”

Khan: Victor Ortiz, Josesito Lopez and Matthysse are potential opponents for me in April

matthysse3123By Scott Gilfoid: You can add WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse and former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz to the list of fighters that former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan may end up fighting in April, 2013. Josesito Lopez is already on the list, but his status is unclear because Khan hasn’t seemed really enthused when mentioning his name.

Khan said on Sky Ringside “There are a few names – Josesito Lopez, Victor Ortiz, there’s Lucas Matthysse, whoever. I fight whoever they [Golden Boy Promotions] puts in front of me.”

Josesito Lopez not impressed with Khan’s win over Molina

lopez112By Scott Gilfoid: Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) has been mentioned as a possible opponent for former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) in April next year. Lopez, 28, is highly interested in facing Khan, and he thinks he can beat him and make a name off of him. Lopez got a chance to see Khan’s win over the smallish 5’6” Carlos Molina last Saturday night, and Lopez wasn’t impressed at all in Khan’s performance in that fight, noting that Khan is still getting hit despite signing on a defensive trainer in Virgil Hunter.

Lopez said to the Boxing Channel “I wasn’t too impressed. He [Khan] fought a smaller guy fighter. Unfortunately for Molina, he really couldn’t get his attention with any of his punches. He managed to land some punches, some good left hooks, but they didn’t seem to startle Khan too much.”

Khan vs. Josesito Lopez possible for April

khan42By Scott Gilfoid: LA Times writer Lance Pugmire is reporting that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is highly interested in matching Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) with Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) for Khan’s next fight in April. Khan ended his two fight losing streak last night in beating lightweight Carlos Molina (17-1, 7 KO’s) by a 10th round stoppage at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles.

Boxing fans were hoping that Khan would attempt to avenge his loss to Danny Garcia, but Schaefer is thinking of making that fight later towards the end of next year. Lopez is the one that Schaefer wants for Khan next.

Josesito Lopez talks about fights with Victor Ortiz and Saul Alvarez

Image: Josesito Lopez talks about fights with Victor Ortiz and Saul AlvarezBy Ian Aldous: After seeing his career explode into the mainstream this year, Josesito Lopez (30-5) hopes to see more big fights coming his way in 2013. A career-defining win was shortly followed by a devastating stoppage loss, albeit in a weight division he probably isn’t built for. This week Josesito Lopez took some time to talk with me about his breakout year in boxing.

Having beaten the then unbeaten, Mike Dallas Jr. via seventh round stoppage, Josesito Lopez hoped to cap off 2011 with another win over an unbeaten fighter. Unfortunately a split-decision defeat against Jessie Vargas may have harmed his chances of securing a title fight. Little did he know what 2012 had in store for him. “After that tough split-decision loss, I just wanted to get back in there and get a ‘W’ no matter what. I was preparing for a fight;
