Sullivan Barrera wants Jean Pascal fight

Image: Sullivan Barrera wants Jean Pascal fight

By Jeff Aranow: #4 WBA, #9 IBF, #12 WBC light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (18-1, 13 KOs) is targeting a fight against former WBC 175lb champion Jean Pascal (31-4-1, 18 KOs) next, as he believes that a win over the 34-year-old Canadian will get him a shot at the winner of the Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev fight.

It’s interesting Barrera isn’t calling out unbeaten #2 IBF contender Artur Beterbiev (11-0, 11 KOs) for a fight, because that would be a fight that would make a lot more sense for Barrera to be taking if he wants a title shot against the Ward-Kovalev winner.

Jean Pascal vs. Stjepan Bozic on December 16

pascal5

By Eric Baldwin: Former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (30-4-1, 17 KOs) will be looking to turn his career around on December 16 when he faces 42-year-old journeyman Stjepan Bozic (29-11, 19 KOs) at the Cabaret Amphitheatre Cogeco Trois-Rivieres, in Quebec, Canada. Pascal really needs a win right now, as he’s lost two out of his last three fights since 2015.

You can argue that Pascal has lost his last three fights, because his only win in the last two years was a very controversial one against Yunieski Gonzlez in July of 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pascal beat the Cuban Gonzalez by a 10 round unanimous decision by the scores of 96-94, 96-94 and 96-94. However, a lot of boxing fans that saw that fight had Gonzalez winning handily.

The judges had their reasons for giving Pascal the win, but a lot of fans disagreed with the judges. Gonzalez was taking the fight to Pascal for the entire 10 round fight and was hammering him with heavy head shots.

Joe Smith Jr. vs. Jean Pascal in the works

Image: Joe Smith Jr. vs. Jean Pascal in the works

By Patrick McHugh: Joe Smith Jr. and Jean Pascal could be facing each other in the fall of this year, according to RingTV. a fight between the two highly ranked contenders is in the works, says Smith Jr’s promoter Joe DeGuardia. Smith Jr. (22-1, 18 KOs), ranked #2 with the World Boxing Council at light heavyweight, is coming off of a career best 1st round knockout victory over the highly ranked former world title challenger Andrzej Fonfara last June at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois.

For his part, the 33-year-old Pascal has seen better days in his boxing career, as he’s lost two out of his last three fights in two stoppage losses to IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. It probably wasn’t the smartest move that Pascal (30-4-1, 17 KOs) could make in choosing to fight Kovalev in a rematch last January, because he was stopped in the 7th round of a one-sided fight.

When special plans go wrong

kovalev-pascal2 (5)By Yannis Mihanos: Special plans can make a difference in a fight and even turn somebody into legend. Nevertheless, in life, there are always two sides of the coin and boxing could not be an exception. Things can happen in reverse too. Prior to the rematch against Sergey Kovalev, former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal made claims that he and his coach Freddie Roach were preparing something special, something that their opponent didn’t expect.

Some serious expectation was built prior to the fight but in the end all it took was a few seconds for Pascal to realize that it ain’t gonna happen. Not now, not in this lifetime. All it took was one punch in the face to realize that no special plan can work against this kind of power and opponent.

Kovalev easily stopped Pascal in the 7th round. The fight was not competitive at all, and nothing like the first fight between them. It was so one-sided that it was boring to watch.
