This will no doubt be one of the biggest and toughest fights of George Groves’ short career.

Groves has said how excited he is for this fight “this is a tough fight. It’s the fight I have asked for and I can’t wait.” Glen Johnson has been in with some of the best fighters in the Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight divisions of the past decade and just last year made it hard work for current and former IBF Super Middleweight Champions Carl Froch and Lucian Bute, going all 12 rounds with both fighters.

Groves knows how tough the veteran will be but knows this is a big step towards in his world title ambitions saying “Johnson will give anyone a hard nights work. I’m heading in the right direction for a world title.” This is all part of the master plan Groves’ manager and trainer Adam Booth has for the 24 year olds world title dreams. Booth says that he plans for George to have “3 or 4 fights next year; then he should be ready to become world champion.”

This is a massive step in the right direction for Groves as Johnson is not only a big name, but although he is on a 3 fight losing streak is still a live and dangerous opponent. This is a massive difference Groves’ biggest domestic rival James Degale. Who struggled against un-fancied French opponent Hadillah Mohoumadi, but managed to defend his European Super Middleweight title at the weekend in a unanimous decision victory. If Groves impresses and beats Johnson in December he really will be in the title picture with a big name on his resume.
