Punch Out Weekly

golovkin5By Peart Miles: Welcome to another weekly addition of Punch Out Weekly where I will be discussing the big stories coming out of the boxing world this past week. Before I begin with the article, no one was able to predict exactly the correct results from this past Saturday’s boxing card in Brooklyn. However, “A Fan” was the closest with predicting a unanimous decision victory both for Seth Mitchell and Adrien Broner.

Congratulations Sakio Bika

After 13 years of professional boxing and facing the likes of Markus Beyer, Lucian Bute, Joe Calzaghe and Andre Ward, now Sakio Bika is finally a world champion capturing the vacant WBC super middleweight title from the awkward Marco Periban last Saturday.

Golovkin vs Macklin: Gennady takes a step up

352(Photo credit: Team Golovkin) By Thomas Cowan: This Saturday, highly-rated power puncher Gennady Golovkin defends his WBA middleweight belt against Britain’s Matthew Macklin. Golovkin hasn’t exactly faced the best opponents in the division but that could be because he’s being avoided due to his fearsome power. Of the 26 opponents he has faced, he’s stopped 23 and nobody has gone the distance with him for just over 5 years.

Macklin has lost 2 out of his last 3 fights but those losses have come against world class opposition. He lost a split decsion to Felix Sturm in a fight many thought Macklin edged and then he put up of good fight against Sergio Martinez and dropped the Argentinian in the 7th, before Martinez overpowered Macklin to force an 11th round stoppage.

Golovkin’s trainer: Macklin isn’t as tough a fight for us as Proksa

354By Scott Gilfoid: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s), thinks Golovkin’s fight against the hard hitting southpaw Grzegorz Proksa last September was a harder fight for Golovkin than this Saturday’s title defense Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

Sanchez thinks Macklin is tough, but he thinks Proksa was more difficult because of his southpaw stance and the variety of skills he brought to the table in that fight.

Sanchez said to Steve Kim at Maxboxing.com “I don’t think it’s the toughest fight that we’ve had…Proksa was tougher…the style, left hander, a mover.”

Golovkin vs. Macklin: WBA World Middleweight Title

golovkin33By Sevak Sarkisian: As many boxing fans already know, exciting middleweight Gennady Golovkin will make his return to the ring to take on Mathew Macklin on June 29th on HBO’s Boxing After Dark series.

Gennady Golovkin (26-0 -23 KO’s) has one the highest knockout ratios in the current boxing landscape. He is also the current WBA world middleweight champion. Along with his great punching power, he is very good at cutting off the ring and loves to come forward and stalk his opponents and apply consistent pressure. He throws every punch in the book very well and has excellent punching technique. He also has an extensive amateur back round to fall back on.

Golovkin vs. Macklin next Saturday, June 29th on HBO in Mashantucket, Connecticut

710(Photo credit Team Golovkin) By Scott Gilfoid: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) will have a nice little stay busy fight next Saturday night, June 29th against contender Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) on HBO at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Some boxing fans see this as a competitive fight, but I don’t see it that way. I’ve seen enough of Macklin to know that he’s going to do no better against Golovkin that Nobuhiro Ishida did.

golovin1By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) made it clear in an interview that he’s very interested in facing WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in the near future at some point.

Golovkin said to esnewsporting.com “I think it’s [Canelo vs. Golovkin] a great fight. I want this fight. I think Canelo’s going to go to 160 after Mayweather fight.”

Ward lacking in options for next opponent may mean a bout with Golovkin soon

ward54By Boxing Muse – @BoxingMuse – Pound 4 pound number 2 Andre Ward who has not boxed since his impressive TKO of Chad Dawson on September 8, 2012 stands alone as the best boxer in the 168lb division, which is proving to temporarily halt the progression of his career.

It is accurate to say Andre Ward is the best super-middle weight but it also fair to say he is not the most entertaining fighter. The battle for the best super-middleweight behind Ward took place on May 25th; Froch v Kessler 2 was a thrilling fight involving two warriors going to war and Froch prevailed as the second best super-middle weight in boxing.

Golovkin: Dibella said I can fight Sergio Martinez if I beat Macklin

golovkin12333By Scott Gilfoid: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) has a lot riding on his fight against Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) on Jun 29th at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

If Golovkin wins this fight, he’s going to be facing WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in a unification match. Golovkins says that Sergio Martinez’s promoter Lou Dibella told him that if he can get past Macklin, he’ll put him in with Martinez.

Whether that turns out to be the case or not is a whole different matter altogether. Just because a promoter says something verbally to a fighter doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Afolabi predicts KO win for Golovkin over Macklin

golovkin45By Scott Gilfoid: Cruiserweight Ola Afolabi is picking WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) to knockout challenger Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) on June 29th at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, Mashantucket, Connecticut.

While Afolabi likes Macklin a lot and thinks he’s got a lot of power, he thinks Golovkin is going to be just too strong for Macklin to handle and he sees the fight ending in a knockout for Golovkin.

Afolabi said to Sky Ringside “I think it’s going to be a knockout. The guy [Golovkin] hits incredibly hard. I’ve been in the ring with heavyweights, cruiserweights, light heavyweights, and I get in the ring with this kid and every time he hits me, I saw whoa…Macklin has the style to walk into something.”
