Sergio Martinez talks Chavez Jr. & Golovkin

martinez2By Allan Fox: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) turns 38-years-old today as he gets ready for his first defense of his WBC title against unbeaten #12 WBC Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11 KO’s) on April 27th at the Estadio José Amalfitani, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina.

Martinez says he’s open to facing former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. again in a rematch, but he wants him to agree to random blood testing for performance enhancing drugs before he’ll agree to face him again. Thus far, Martinez hasn’t heard anything from Chavez Jr. about whether he’ll agree to the testing.

Martinez told viptoday.es There should more than six doping tests during the two months prior to the bout, which include blood testing…These are my conditions…[Gennady] Golovkin, who is emerging as a rival to be reckoned too. I think in a few years will be the middleweight king. First I have to fight with Murray…Once we can talk Golovkin.”

That’s interesting that Martinez sees Golovkin as the future middleweight king of the division. Golovkin is considered to be the best fighters at this weight by a lot boxing fans, but he’s unable to get the top fighters to agree to fight him as of yet.

That would be a courageous thing for Martinez to do in agreeing to face him after the Murray fight. However, I doubt that Martinez’s promoter Lou Dibella will ever agree to a fight between Martinez and Golovkin, especially now that Martinez is 38 and starting to show signs of aging.

Martinez may have problems lining up a rematch with Chavez Jr. if he sticks to his desire to have blood testing for performance enhancing drugs. Chavez Jr. needs this fight in order to show that he’s a better fighter than what he showed in his lopsided loss to Martinez last year in September in his 12 round unanimous decision loss, but it’s doubtful that Chavez Jr. will agree to the kinds of drug testing that Martinez wants if it goes beyond the normal testing for the state that the rematch will take place.
