Boxing is not a dying sport

canelo323By Timothy Medina: For a few years many people have been saying boxing is not exciting like it used to be in the early 2000s. Many people have even considered boxing as a dying sport. As a boxing fan, last year I even agreed that the sport was not exciting as it was in the previous decade. The one thing I could not agree with was that boxing is dying. This sport is what I love dearly and so many fans of it can say the same thing. It is impossible to lose hope for boxing or any sport when you have so much passion towards it.

In 2013, boxing made its way back to the top as the elite combat sport, Boxing was back in the spotlight that UFC had been in for years. 2013 has been the most exciting year for boxing in recent years. It is difficult to say who was boxing’s fighter of 2013 or what the fight of 2013 was because there are many strong candidates for both categories. So many great things happened in the sport in just one year and at the perfect time too.

Khan-Mayweather a good marketable fight, says Golovkin

floyd#900By Dan Ambrose: To Gennady Golovkin a fight between Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) is a fight that will bring in good money through pay-per-view and ticket sales. Obviously Mayweather isn’t exactly sold on Khan as an opponent the way that Golovkin is because he would have signed the fight ages in order to start drumming up interest in the fight. If you look at Mayweather’s recent fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, he wasn’t hesitant about signing for the fight.

What Mayweather doesn’t need is another Robert Guerrero type of opponent that results in his next fight bringing in less than 1 million PPV buys. If Mayweather fights Khan on May 3rd, then we’re probably looking at another fight with less than 1 million buys for Floyd. He can’t have that right now. Mayweather’s a business man and he’s got to go with the safe choice in facing Marcos Maiadana next, not Khan. That’s a risky right.

Golovkin has never seen video of Osumanu Adama fight

golovkin6544By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO’s) is getting ready to fight an opponent he has never seen fight before in 33-year-old fringe contender Osumanu Adama (22-3, 16 KO’s) on February 1st in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Golovkin says he’s never seen him fight on video, and it doesn’t look like he’s even interested in seeing any of Adama’s past fight. You can’t really blame Golovkin though, because Adama is a guy that his promoters at K2 has selected for him to keep busy in early 2014 while he waits for more interesting fights to possibly open up for him.

After the Adama fight, Golovkin could be facing James Kirkland in April. That’s a match-up comparable to Golovkin’s recent annihilation of Curtis Stevens. Kirkland is plenty tough, but no match for a fighter like Golvkin skill-wise.

Martin Murray vs. Jarrod Fletcher on Golovkin-Adama card in Monte Carlo on Feb. 1st

murray66By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBA Martin Murray (26-1-1, 11 KO’s) no longer has to worry about needing to fight WBA 160 lb. champion Gennady Golovkin or any of the other good middleweight champions in order to try and win a world title. >

The World Boxing Association has elevated Golovkin to the WBA Super World middleweight champion and freed up his regular WBA title for Murray to fight #3 WBA Jarrod Fletcher (17-1, 10 KO’s) for the vacant WBA 160 lb. title on February 1st on the undercard of Golovkin’s title defense against Osumanu Adama at the Salle des etoiles, in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Martin Murray thinks he can beat Golovkin

murray53By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBA Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) recently had the chance to fight WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin for his title, but instead Murray down the fight and went in a safer direction in facing journeyman Sergey Khomitsky (28-9-2, 11 KO’s) this Saturday night at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, London. But despite turning down the fight with Golovkin, Murray is saying he thinks he can beat him.

It’s hard to understand Murray’s logic. If he actually believes he can beat Golovkin, then what in the heck is Murray doing fighting a journeyman like Khomitsky? Murray Already fought this guy in 2009 and beat him by an unimpressive 8 round decision, and now he’s fighting him again for some reason. It doesn’t make sense.

Andre Dirrell calls out Golovkin and Froch

dirrell654By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight contender Andre Dirrell (21-1, 14 KO’s) is ready to get back in the ring after dealing with some problems for the past 10 months, and he wants to fight both Gennady Golovkin and Carl Froch if can get them in the ring. Dirrell say Golovkin mentioned his name recently, and he badly wants to get the 5’10” in the ring to fight him.

Dirrell fought Golovkin twice in the amateurs and had a 1-1 record against him. However, Dirrell thinks he should have been given the decision in the fight he lost against him.

As for Froch, Dirrell already fought him in 2009 and boxed well enough to deserve a wide decision. The judges, however, scored the fight for Froch. As most people already know, the fight took place in Froch’s home city of Nottingham, UK. Dirrell’s ready to school Froch a second time.

Hearn trying to match Froch against Chavez Jr., Golovkin or Ward

froch454545By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/W BA super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn saying he had a conversation with HBO about potentially matching Froch against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Gennady Golovkin or Andre Ward in that order. Ward was the last name that Hearn mentioned, and that doesn’t surprise me at all because he beat Froch already in 2011.

Hearn said to Sky Ringside “The fight I want to make is Froch vs. George Groves. Carl’s got a lot of options. I was talking to HBO last week, talking about Chavez, talking about Golovkin, talking about Ward. I appreciate what the fans want [Froch vs. Groves], and I want it too. Hopefully, we can get it made.”

Who is the most feared man in boxing?

golovkin451By Jamie Eskdale: With it seemingly being easy to avoid threats in boxing I decided to have a look through the divisions and see who is being avoided. While looking 3 names quickly popped up. Sergey Kovalev seems to be avoided like the plague. It would seem no one in the light heavyweight division wants anything to do with the Russian. Kudos must go to Nathan Cleverly for making a voluntary WBO title defense against the heavy handed Kovalev though it turned out to be a mistake as Cleverly was decimated in a 4 round destruction.

Kovalev made it clear he was ready and willing to fight anyone in the division and unification fights against the other champions were his priority.

Golovkin faces fringe contender Adama on February 1st in Monte Carlo

golovkin7By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0 25 KO’s) will be defending his title next on February 1st against #14 WBA Osumanu Adama (22-3, 16 KO’s) at the Salle des etoiles, in Monte Carlo, Monaco. For boxing fans hoping that Golovkin would fight a quality opponent, this fight is a really disappointing one.

Adama is fringe contender ranked at nearly the bottom of the World Boxing Association rankings, and he’s not ranked at all in the top 15 by the other sanctioning bodies. Adama was easily beaten last year by former IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale.
