Froch not sure if he’ll fight Groves again

froch675By Scott Gilfoid: Upon receiving nonstop booing from the large Manchester Arena crowd last night after his controversial stoppage win over George Groves (19-1, 15 KO’s), IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (32-2, 23 KO’s) said to his promoter Eddie Hearn that he should give the 25-year-old Groves a rematch so that they could “sort it out.”

At the post-fight press conference, Froch seemed to have had second thoughts about that idea, as he said that he doesn’t have to give Groves a rematch, and that he’s open to fighting anyone.

Is Mayweather Jr. afraid of Golovkin?

floyd676By Tim Knight: Floyd Mayweather Sr. was interviewed by Chris Robinson from Hustleboss.com days after the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight and was posed with the question of whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. should fight WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin next? Floyd Sr. responded, “I would advise him not to.” Proving that he fears for Floyd Jr would lose to him.

Floyd Sr. would not approve of Floyd Jr. fighting a man that could beat him. He approves of Amir Khan, and we all know why, the guy has a glass jaw. Mayweather would beat Khan senseless, but Floyd Sr. says, “no” to Gennady, because he knows Floyd Jr. would lose to him. Floyd Sr. is only going to approve of boxers he knows his son can beat, and is going to disapprove of those he knows his son will lose to.

Is Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr the marquee name that Gennady Golovkin needs?

chavez44By Robbie Bannatyne: WBA Middleweight Champion, Gennady Golovkin’s impressive eighth-round stoppage of Curtis Stevens on HBO drew the third-largest audience for a boxing match on cable in 2013. According to Nielsen Media Research, it averaged 1.41 million viewers.

Unsurprisingly, fans favourite Miguel Cottos comeback performance, a 3rd round TKO victory Delvin Rodriguez, takes top stop after attracting an average viewership of 1.555 million viewers. In second place, is another fighter with a fanatical fan following- Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr, whose controversial victory over Bryan Vera yielded average viewing figures of 1.416 million.

Golovkin won’t be fighting Martin Murray in February

golovkin45By Scott Gilfoid: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions shot down the idea of WBA interim middleweight champion Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO’s) on February 1st at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco. It’s not going to happen. Loeffler already offered the Golovkin fight to Murray in the past but he turned it down.

Loeffler says they want guys like Sergio Martinez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for Golovkin, although neither of those guys are going to be available to fight Golovkin for his next fight in February.

Loeffler said to RingTV “Murray had turned down a previous shot for him to fight Gennady in Canada…We would like a unification fight with Martinez, or a fight with Julio Cesar Chavez…until we can get one of them in the ring with him, we’re going to keep Gennady active.”

Martin Murray vs. Gennady Golovkin on February 1st

murray64(Martin Murray seen here using his turtle defense against Sergio Martinez) By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBA, Martin Murray (25-1, 11 KO’s) will be meeting up with WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO’s) in the 31-year-old Murray’s biggest fight of his career on February 1st at the Salle des etoiles, in Monte Carlo, Monaco. I wouldn’t say that this is Golovkin’s toughest fight of his career because he’s been in with Gabriel Rosado and Curtis Stevens, and I rate both of those guys as being better fighters than Murray.

The fight will be interesting to see how well Golovkin does against a large middleweight that tends to cover up a lot. With Murray’s style of hiding behind a high guard for 12 rounds, I’d be very surprised if he’ll be able to make it past the third round wit the way that he leaves his body open in focusing on covering his head.

Where will Golovkin go from here?

golovkin5621By Robbie Bannatyne: Gennady Golovkin, widely believed to be the best Middleweight in World, again enhanced his burgeoning reputation in the boxing world with his 15th straight knockout as Curtis Stevens retired on his stool in the 8th round of their world title fight last Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, New York, USA.

The 31 year old Kazakh, with a knockout percentage of 89%, the highest in middleweight history and most prolific among any active fighter in the sport once again gave a ruthlessly efficient display, stalking his prey relentlessly in a performance that probably had enough power and poise to put away any 160lb fighter on the planet.

Would Gennady Golovkin get a taste of his own medicine at Super Middleweight?

golovkin78483By Robbie Bannatyne: The undefeated Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25KO) with a knockout percentage of 89%, the highest in middleweight history, and most prolific among any active fighter in the sport is often referred to as the ‘most avoided man in boxing’.

However, this may all soon change if he makes his proposed move up to the Super Middleweight.

Despite his overwhelming dominance against Curtis Stevens, which saw him land 49 percent of his power shots, Golovkin was caught on many occasions with quick and powerful counter punches from the challenger.

Sanchez: Mike Perez might be another Golovkin at heavyweight

perez65By Allan Fox: Trainer Abel Sanchez is very excited about his fighter heavyweight Mike Perez (20-0, 12 KO’s) following his 10 round unanimous decision win over the previously unbeaten Magomed Abdusalamov (18-1, 18 KO’s) last Saturday night in Madison Square Garden. Sanchez just started training the 6’0″, 235 lb. Perez not long ago, and he feels that he has the talent to be the heavyweight division’s version of Gennady Golovkin.

Having seen the 28-year-old Perez against Abdusalamov and in other bouts, I’m not sure that Perez has the kind of power needed to be another Golovkin at heavyweight. He doesn’t really look like a big puncher. Abdusalmov looked like the much superior slugger than Perez last Saturday. I realize that Abduslamov took a lot of punishment to the head in that fight, but I don’t think that’s because Perez is a huge puncher.

Andy Lee sees Froch giving Golovkin a lot of problems

froch74By Scott Gilfoid: #7 WBC, #11 WBA, middleweight contender Andy Lee chimed in about his thoughts last night about a hypothetical fight between Britain’s Carl Froch and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in the future. Lee said he thinks Froch might be too strong for the 5’10 1/2″ Golovkin. The funny part is he thinks that Golovkin and Andre Ward would be a good fight. In other words, Golovkin would have a chance to beat Ward.

Lee told Sky “I’d love to see [Gennady] fight Ward because it would be a contest of boxers and we’d see who would out-skill the other. But I think he [Gennady] would have a lesser chance against Froch because Froch is so powerful and if he stood in front of Froch he might be in danger of getting knocked out.”

Sanchez: Sergio Martinez needs to fight Golovkin or get out

martinez14By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez thinks it’s high time that WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) agrees to fight Golovkin so that they can find out who the best fighter is in the 160 lb. division. Sanchez thinks that a certain percentage of the boxing fans still see the 38-year-old Martinez as the top fighter in the middleweight division despite the fact that Golovkin has looked a lot better than him in the last year and that Martinez starting to show serious signs of decline.

Sanchez told Fightnews.com “I don’t think Sergio wants to fight him. He [Sergio] better move up and fight him or get out.”
