golovkin7By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0 25 KO’s) will be defending his title next on February 1st against #14 WBA Osumanu Adama (22-3, 16 KO’s) at the Salle des etoiles, in Monte Carlo, Monaco. For boxing fans hoping that Golovkin would fight a quality opponent, this fight is a really disappointing one.

Adama is fringe contender ranked at nearly the bottom of the World Boxing Association rankings, and he’s not ranked at all in the top 15 by the other sanctioning bodies. Adama was easily beaten last year by former IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale. He was dominated by Don George three years ago in an 8 round decision loss and beaten by Dyah Davis in 2009 in losing a 6 round decision. Golovkin’s promoters at K2 seem to have put Golovkin backwards with his career with this fight, because it’s not the type of fight that will win Golovkin new fans.

Golovkin had recently upgraded his level of opposition in his last two fights in beating Matthew Macklin and Curtis Stevens after years of fighting largely weaker opposition. But now it looks like Golovkin is going back to the level he was at before when he was fighting fringe level opposition.

Fans want to see Golovkin take on better opposition. He’s not having much luck in getting the other middleweight champions – Darren Barker, Sergio Martinez and Peter Quillin in fighting him. Golovkin is kind of stuck defending his opposition against the contenders in the division rather than the other champions. He wanted to fight #1 WBA Martin Murray, but that fight probably won’t happen until 2014, if then. Murray isn’t a great opponent either. He was beaten in his last fight by Sergio Martinez, and he fought Felix Sturm to a draw.

The middleweight division used to be a strong division, but it’s grown very weak with just a few good fighters and a lot of middle of the road fighters. The best of the bunch is Golovkin, Barker, Murray, Geale, Martinez and Quillin, but none of them are in a hurry to fight Golovkin.
