Golovkin won’t be fighting on April 26th after father passes away

golovkin44By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s father has reportedly passed away in Kazakhstan, and Golovkin now won’t be available to fight on April 26th like his promoters at K2 Promotion had planed. Golovkin’s April 26th fight against Andy Lee was supposed to be announced this weekend, but that’s not going to happen now. Golovkin will be traveling back to Kazakhstan to be with his family members. As for when his next fight will take place, it’s unknown at this time.

However, Golovkin won’t be fighting Andy Lee when he does return to the ring this year, because Top Rank promoter Bob arum is interested in matching Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. up against Golovkin for later this year.

Chavez Jr. vs. Golovkin possible for July 12th at 168

chavez65By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is reportedly in talks with WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler for a fight between Golovkin and former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (47-1-1, 32 KO’s) for July 12th, according to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports. Chavez Jr. has to get past his rematch against Brian Vera (23-7, 14 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The fight between Chavez Jr. and Golovkin would be at the full 168 lb weight for the super middleweight division.

Golovkin will probably make a mess of Chavez Jr. if that fight is made. Chavez Jr. has an uncanny ability to take punishment, but Golovkin is too powerful for him to be taking head shots for 12 rounds without getting stopped in some fashion, whether it be from cuts or a clinical knockout.

Martin Murray has option of facing Golovkin if he wants it

MARTIN MURRAY will get a third shot at a world middleweight title in the next few months, he just has to decide which option is best for him.

Hatton Promotions currently has two offers on the table, with one offering the St Helens puncher a career best payday.

Both of the options have been secured outside of the United States due to Murray’s past problems in obtaining a visa.

Martin was due to make his American debut in a world title fight with Julio Cesar Chaevz Jr in 2012, but was unable to enter the country.

Golovkin’s April 26th opponent to be announced this week, says Loeffler

golovkin454By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions will be making an announcement this week about who Golovkin will be fighting next on April 26th, according to Steve Kim. It’s expected to be fringe contender #11 WBA Andy Lee (31-2, 22 KO’s), because Loeffler ruled out a fight between Golovkin and the dangerous Erislandy Lara. Lee is far easier fight for Golovkin than Lara, and it’ll help avoid any slip ups on Golovkin’s part.

Lee isn’t an upgrade from the last opponent that Golovkin fought in beating Osumanu Adama on February 1st of this month. Lee is probably a downgrade from Adama, because he doesn’t have the chin or the stamina that Adama has, and he’s not nearly as clever. Adama was like a punching bag for Golovkin until the referee finally halted the fight in the 7th after watching Adama get dropped and then staggered.

Most challenging fights for Pound for Pound Top 10

mayweather223By Bob Smith: In this article, I list the ESPN pound for pound top 10, and the most difficult fights that they can possibly face this year. Many of the fights are unlikely for that very reason, but no boxer is invulnerable, and some very famous boxers would not do very well against realistic competitors. If there is no one who can challenge the boxer at that weight, I list “no one”; if there is a challenge, I list the P4P star’s odds of victory – not the betting odds, but the odds that they will win.

#1 Floyd Mayweather – @140 – no one; @147 – no one; @154 – Erislandy Lara, 3 to 1; Sergio Martinez, 3 to 2; Gennady Golovkin, 3 to 2.

Sergio Martinez says he wants Gennady Golovkin

martinez14By Dan Ambrose: After being chased for over 2 years by WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s), WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) is saying that he wants to fight Golovkin if he can win his next fight against Miguel Cotto on June 7th. That’s a really big if for Martinez, because he’s been looking old lately since the 12th round of his fight against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in September of 2012. That fight seemed to have really aged Martinez in a fierce way.

Sergio was taken the distance in his last fight by Martin Murray, and he arguably won what many boxing fans felt was a hometown decision in that one. The fight took place in Argentina and it’s easy to picture Murray getting his hand raised if it had taken place anywhere else in the world but there.

Golovkin’s promoter not interested in Lara bout

lara5By Chris Williams: If you were hoping to see a fight between Cuban Erislandy Lara and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in April or anytime in the future, you can pretty much forget about it. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions says that Lara isn’t someone that they have on their radar.

Loeffler wants to match Golovkin against one of the middleweight champions like Peter Quillin or Sergio Martinez in a unification bout. Loeffler points out that Lara doesn’t fight for HBO like Golvokin, and that he’s had draws in fights against Vanes Martirosyan and Carlos Molina in the past. He also says that Lara doesn’t fight in the same division as Golovkin.

Lara open to fighting Golovkin next

06 Lara IMG_3069(Photo credit: Showtime) By Allan Fox: If WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) is open to the idea, WBA interim junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) says he’s willing to fight him. This would be arguably the toughest fight of Golovkin’s career if he and his promoters at K2 Promotions were to agree to take the fight, but I can’t see them saying yes though.

Lara fights for Golden Boy Promotions on Showtime, while Golovkin fights on HBO. It’s doubtful that Showtime would say yes to Lara fighting on HBO, and it’s also possible that HBO wouldn’t go for the idea of a Showtime fighter fighting on HBO.

Can Golovkin get a big fight this year and who should he face next?

golovkin44By Thomas Cowan: Last Saturday, highly hyped knockout artist Gennady Golovkin defended his WBA middleweight title, stopping the brave but ultimately overmatched Ghanaian challenger Osumanu Adama inside 7 rounds in Monte Carlo. Golovkin has said he is ready to fight anyone from 154-168lbs but so far the big fights have eluded him. So will he get one in 2014?

The most natural fight for Golovkin to take would appear to one against one of the other middleweight champions. However, the chances of this happening appear bleak. IBF champion Felix Sturm showed no intention of facing Golovkin when he was Sturm’s WBA mandatory challenger in 2012. A potential fight with WBO champion Peter Quillin is blocked by network issues and even if this barrier could be overcome, it is highly unlikely Quillin’s handlers would fancy his chances against Golovkin after Quillin’s unconvincing win over Gabriel Rosado, who Golovkin stopped easily.

Gennady Golovkin vs. Andy Lee in the works for April 26th

lee343By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) will be facing #11 WBA. #11 WBO Andy Lee (31-2, 22 KO’s) on April 26th at Madison Square Garden in New York. James Kirkland is out of the picture for Golovkin for that date, according to Dan Rafael. He’s reporting that Kirkland’s camp has said no to the Golovkin fight, although he could fight on the undercard against a still to be determined opponent.

As for former IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale, he’s said no to the fight because the April 26th date conflicts with another sports program that will be televised on the same night in Australia. Geale wants the fight to be shown in Australia. However, that can’t happen unless Golovkin changes the date for his next fight, and that obviously isn’t going to happen, not for a less than popular fighter like Geale.
