Chavez Jr vs. ‘GGG’ Golovkin: Dont Blink

chavez93By B.G.B: It seems that WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s (29-0 26 KO’s) fearsome knockout ability is finally paying dividends. The upcoming bout with super middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr  (48-1-1 (1 nc) 32 KO’s) is without a doubt the biggest fight of Golovkin’s career thus far. But what kind of challenges can we expect Chavez to confront Golovkin with? Chavez has an impressive amount of KO’s himself and has proven that he has the ability to cause damage to fighters.

In a fight he was badly loosing against Sergio Martinez, he was able to impose himself in the final round almost getting what would’ve been a huge victory. Golovkin however, is not Sergio Martinez. In fact, Golovkin is a completely different animal to any fighter that Chavez would have faced. In retrospect, Golovkin has never fought someone like Chavez. Both like to fight. Both will come to fight. There is not a shadow of a doubt in my mind that this fight will end in a knockout; a defining knockout that will make or break either of them.

Weight Class Unification

By DC: This is the first time I have written an article on Boxing News but have been on the website and read almost every article for some time now. A lot of topics are covered pretty frequently but one topic I believe has gone over looked or has been loosely talked about in other articles is weight class unification. A topic usually overlooked by the conversation of why or why not Floyd Mayweather should or should not fight Manny Pacquiao and who needs who. What defines and Elite fighter today?

Chavez Jr: I’m confident I can beat Golovkin

chavez65By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KO’s) is being given very little chance of beating WBA 160lb champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) by knowledgeable boxing fans for his upcoming July 19th HBO pay per view clash against the Kazakhstan fighter. However, Chavez Jr. thinks he’s going to beat Golovkin, and that’s obviously the only reason why he agreed to take the fight against him.

Chavez Jr. will have an advantage in weight, possibly as much as 20-25 pounds by the time he rehydrates after the weigh-in. The fight will take place at 168lbs with no catch-weight. Golovkin will be moving up in weight from 168, so making weight won’t be a problem for him. Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank agreed to a $1 million weight penalty that only come into play if either fighter fails to make the 168lb weigh-in limit.

I understand Golovkin/Chavez fight

chavez0By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: When the Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Julio Cesar Chavez JR. fight was first mentioned I was a little upset that it wasn’t Andre Ward, but I see the potential direction this could go. I’m not the biggest fan of either GGG or Chavez, but this fight makes sense; financially and name wise. The ONLY gripe I had with GGG was Abel Sanchez, his trainer. He stated, before the Curtis Stevens bout, that GGG was willing to fight anyone between 154-175.

When WBA super middleweight champ Andre Ward’s name came up, team GGG said they wanted to exhaust all options at 160 before moving up. This further muddied the waters. I too, being a Ward fan, let the emotional bug bite me.

Golovkin won’t be permanently moving to 168 after Chavez Jr. bout

golovkin14By Dan Ambrose: Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) will be moving up to 168 to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KO’s) for just this one fight on July 19th, and it won’t be a permanent move for Golovkin in staying at this weight, says his promoter Tom Loeffer. The Chavez Jr vs. Golovkin bout will be on HBO pay per view, if the two sides can agree to the contract details. Right now, they’re still working out the contract deal, but it’s very likely the fight will take place because both fighters want the bout, as do their promoters at K2 and Top Rank.

“He’s [Golovkin] clearly going to continue to campaign in the middleweight division, but getting a fight with Chavez Jr. is one of the biggest fights that we could have on our radar,” Loeffer said to Fighthype. “And in order to get that opportunity to fight Chavez, there is a lot of concessions that we would have to make and weight was one of them.”

Chavez Jr. agrees to $1 million weight penalty for Golovkin fight on July 19th

chavez012By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KO’s) showed how badly he wants a big pay per view fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s), because he’s agreed to a big $1 million weight penalty for the July 19th fight. The bout will be taking place at 168lbs, and Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions wanted the weight penalty in case Chavez Jr. came in over weight like he did in his first fight against Brian Vera last year. That’s the fight that eventually took place at 173lbs due to Chavez Jr. being too heavy to make the normal super middleweight limit.

Losing $1 million of his purse would be a huge blow to Chavez Jr., but he’ll still do really well because this fight is going to be on HBO PPV and it’s likely to bring in huge numbers. I just hope that Chavez Jr. doesn’t blow off the weight knowing that he’ll still wind up making another $4 million+ for the fight.

Chavez Jr-Golovkin likely to happen on July 12th

chavez923By Dan Ambrose: A huge fight between Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) and former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KO’s) is very likely to happen on July 12th, according to Steve Kim. He says that he’s hearing that the fight has a VERY good chance of taking place in July.

This is really good news, because we haven’t see Chavez Jr. face a good opponent since his loss to Sergio Martinez in 2012, and really that was the only tough opponent that Chavez Jr. has faced during his entire career other than his two fights against Carlos Molina earlier in their careers.

What’s long term for Golovkin?

golovkin5623By Matt Wood: Gennady Golovkin is one boxing’s most promising and exciting new fighters. He had a huge 2013, with four wins that were good enough to earn him Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year. While these fights were convincing enough to get many of us thinking that GGG is the best middleweight in the world, they were over competition that, while admirable, wasn’t great.  At 31, he still has his best years ahead of him, but he’s not exactly a young man anymore, and we’d like him to spend his prime putting it on the line and fighting champions, not the Osumanu Adamas of the world.

Golovkin has been quiet lately due to the death of his father and his return to his native Kazakhstan. While we offer him our condolences during this period of mourning, the fan in us can’t help but be wonder what awaits upon his return. With that said, let’s look at where his current trajectory could lead him over the next year.

Chavez Jr. vs. Golovkin possible for July 12th at the Forum in Los Angeles

golovkin888By Dan Ambrose: A huge fight between former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KO’s) and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) is a possibility for July 12th at the Forum in Los Angeles, California, according to Steve Kim. The particulars aren’t known as of yet, but it’s pretty obvious that the fight will be taking place at super middleweight because there is no way that the huge cruiserweight-sized Chavez Jr. is going to be able to boil down from the 190s to make weight at 160 to fight Golovkin for his World Boxing Association 160lb title.

As it is, Chavez Jr. is going to have a real battle just to continue to make 168. Looking at how huge he was for his recent rematch against Brian Vera earlier this month on March 1st, Chavez Jr. really needs to move up in weight to the light heavyweight division, if not the cruiserweight division.

Arum: Chavez Jr. will be fighting in the Summer – but not against Golovkin

chavez992By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum will be bringing the newly crowned WBC Continental Americas super middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KO’s) back to the ring this Summer to fight against an opponent to be determined. Unfortunately for boxing fans it won’t be WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s), because his father just past away and he’ll not be fighting for a while.

Instead of Golovkin, Chavez Jr. will likely be taking on another lesser opponent. Hopefully Arum will find an actual super middleweight for Chavez Jr. to fight next instead of having middleweights like Brian Vera move up from the 160 lb division to face the cruiserweight-sized Chavez Jr.
