WBA with 3 champs at 160: Jacobs, Golovkin and Chudinov

jacobs8By Allan Fox: Last night, Daniel Jacobs (28-1, 25 KOs) defeated #2 WBA Jarrod Fletcher (18-2, 10 KOs) by a 5th round TKO to win the vacant WBA 160 pound title. It was a good win by Jacobs in proving himself against a guy who arguably should have never been ranked at No.2 given that he was knocked out in the 2nd round by Billy Joe Saunders just two years ago.

To show how messed up the WBA’s rankings are, Saunders is ranked at No.13 by the WBA despite the fact that he has a stoppage win over Fletcher and he’s unbeaten. But what’s more strange is why the WBA has three champions in the middleweight division.

Cotto, Alvarez, Golovkin the 3 man collision course

cotto552By D.A: It’s no secret the most exciting weight divisions to the boxing world and family is the 140-160 range. Of course most of us can agree 147 is the most watched and exciting weight division. The 2nd in my opinion would be the 154/160 divisions in a draw. Recently we’ve seen the best 154 and 160 fighters all win their bouts and fans are calling for all 3 to fight at some point.

That would be Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Boxing fans have been wanting to see Miguel Cotto square off with GGG to see who is the best middleweight fighter in the world. While Golovkin is a title holder he is not the legitimate champion. Cotto captured the 160 crown after beating the former Middleweight king Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez.

Loeffler working on Golovkin’s next fight, likely for October

golovkin0013By Allan Fox: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions is working on putting together WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s next fight, which could take place in Los Angeles, California in October, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Golovkin is coming off of a 3rd round TKO victory over Daniel Geale last July at Madison Square Garden in New York.

With Golovkin having fought a lot recently in the East Coach and Monte Carlo, Loeffler wants to get him some West Coast exposure so that he can pick up fans in this part of the United States.

Daniel Jacobs targeting Golovkin in the future after Fletcher fight

golovkin97464By Dan Ambrose: Daniel Jacobs (27-1, 24 KOs) wants to pick up the vacant WBA middleweight title this Saturday night in his fight against #2 WBA Jarrod Fletcher (18-1, 10 KOs) of Australia, and then move onto unification fights against WBO 160 pound champion Peter Quillin and WBA champion Gennady Golovkin.

The Jacobs vs. Fletcher fight will be taking place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on the undercard of the Rod Salka vs. Danny Garcia fight.

Jacobs says he wants the Golovkin fight, but it’s hard to know if he’s just namedropping or if he’s serious about wanting to fight him. A match between him and Golovkin could prove to be a real tough one to try and put together given that Golovkin fights on HBO, and Jacobs on Showtime.

Golovkin will need to wait on Cotto fight

golovkin994By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) is going to need to stay busy for his next fight this year in October or November, because the fighter that he wants, WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs), is being mentioned as possibly fighting #8 WBO Andy Lee on December 13th instead of Cotto.

Freddie Roach, the trainer for Cotto, wants the Golovkin fight because he sees him as beatable at catch-weight of 155, but the fight is going to need to wait for a little while longer because Cotto has a big money match-up against popular Mexican mega-star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for early 2015 if Cotto’s promoters at Top Rank and Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions can iron out a deal between them.

Overcoming the fear of Kovalev and Golovkin

kovalev111By Gav Duthie: There are some fighters who are so revered that they can have their opponent beaten before they even step in the ring. FEAR can be a boxers greatest weapon but it can also be a major obstacle. Some of our major talents today like Sergey Kovalev and Gennady Golovkin are struggling to get the fights they deserve as a result.
Fear

The obvious example is Mike Tyson. When all the promoters, managers and ring girls stepped out of the ring you are faced with an opponent who has nothing on his mind but destroying you. Mike Tyson was powerful but it was his stare, the thought that he could kill you, destroy you in the ring. Michael Spinks is considered one of the top 3 light heavyweights of all time alongside Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore but the day he stepped into the ring with Iron Mike you could tell he didn’t want to be there. It takes an extremely brave man to beat someone like this and if you can eliminate the fear its half the battle.

Roach has no problem with Cotto vs GGG fight

golovkin7356By T.B: According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael Hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach has no problem with a Miguel Cotto vs Gennady “GGG” Golovkin fight. This coming on the heels of GGG’s “calling out” of Cotto after his KO win over game but completely out classed Daniel Geale.

Roach was in NY with his fighter Glen Tapia for an undercard bout which ended up getting canceled. Instead of packing up and heading home Roach turned the trip into a “scouting” trip.

Roach was in the crowd at Madison Square Garden and came away impressed but not so impressed that he was scared off a possible Cotto vs GGG fight in the future. Roach said a GGG fight is second on his list behind a proposed super fight with Canelo Alvarez which would take place on Cinco De Mayo weekend 2015. When asked Roach said,” I like the Canelo fight better, but I like a fight with GGG second”. I’m assuming By second Roach means as an alternative to Canelo if negotiations fall through, or second as in after the Canelo fight.
