Roach: I’d want Golovkin to come down to 154 for Cotto

roach564By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach says that for a fight between Cotto and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin to take place it require that Golovkin come down to 154 because Roach thinks that Golovkin is too big and strong at 160 for Cotto, according to ESPN’s Dan Rafael.

Roach was at Golovkin’s fight against Daniel Geale last Saturday night and he came away from that fight impressed with Golovkin’s power but he still saw weakness areas that he thinks Cotto could exploit. Roach thinks Golovkin has defensive problems, and he thinks he’s been fighting middle of the road guys.

Golovkin V Ward: Money No excuse!!

golovkin0013By B.G.B: The attention of the boxing world has indeed spun towards WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) after witnessing his 18th straight KO last Saturday night in his 3rd round knockout victory over Daniel Geale (30-3, 6 KOs) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Despite having steadily improved his opposition quality it appears that GGG is simply far beyond the level he’s currently competed at which is no disrespect to his opponents and is not intended to discredit his victories.

The Gennady Golovkin Inquiries II

By Gerardo Granados: It’s been over one year since I got the chance to post an article related to the current WBA – IBO middleweight Champion of the World Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin aka “GGG”, on that occasion a friend of mine asked me a couple of questions about a fighter he didn’t knew much about. One of the questions was “why haven’t I heard of him before?”

Unfair treatment of Golovkin by elite fighters?

golovkin1By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: Gennady Golovkin has called out fellow middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Carl Froch boxing. So far it has netted him nothing. The fight that the public really seems to claiming for is GGG and Andre Ward to get it on. But on several occasions, Tom Loeffler, GGG’s promoter, said they are looking for pay per view bouts.

Gabriel Penagaricano, Cotto adviser, told the Boxing Voice, that GGG is not reached the majors in boxing. He also went on to say the Russian hasn’t participated in a pay per view event. In a recent interview, Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn said that there wasn’t enough money or fan interest yet for a fight between Froch and Golovkin to take place.

Golovkin gets exposed by Hopkins at 160, says Angel Garcia

hopkins2222By Dan Ambrose: Angel Garcia, the father of WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, thinks that 49-year-old IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) would beat WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) if Hopkins were to come down to 160 to fight Golovkin for his title. Angel believes that Hopkins, even at 50, would still beat Golovkin.

“Bernard should fight this Triple G, and come down to middleweight. I bet Bernard exposes him,” Angel said. “I’m saying Bernard would expose him at [age] 50.”

Arum prefers Cotto to fight Canelo, and not Golovkin

canelo788By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says the ultimate decision on who WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) wants to fight in his next couple of bouts is going to be made by him.

Arum isn’t bashful in saying that he wants Cotto to fight Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next year rather than WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Arum sees the Canelo-Cotto fight as being the better match for Cotto than a Cotto-Golovkin fight. To Arum, it comes to the most reward that his fighter Cotto can get based on the risk.

Will fear deny Golovkin the chance to be an all time great?

golovkin66By Robbie Bannatyne: Former American President, Franklin D Roosevelt, once insisted that there was ‘nothing to fear, but fear itself’ in his First Inaugural Address to the American public.

If Roosevelt was alive now, and happened to be at Madison Square Garden last Saturday night, his famous statement would probably read something like ‘there is nothing to fear, but fear itself. And Golovkin’

For Gennady Golovkin is the most feared man in boxing right now. Perhaps he is the most avoided fighter in middleweight history.

Golovkin-Geale HBO numbers not impressive, averages 984K viewers

golovkin994By Chris Williams: The stats are out for last Saturday’s HBO fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Geale, and they’re less than spectacular. According to the Nielson ratings, Golovkin vs. Geale was the 8th most popular boxing fight for HBO in 2014. The fight averaged 984K viewers and peaked at 1.048M.

Dan Rafael of ESPN believes that the reason the ratings were less than tremendous was because the fight only lasted 3 rounds. But it might be the fact that Geale wasn’t a well-known opponent for Golovkin to be fighting. HBO blessed the fight, perhaps thinking that because Geale was a former IBF/WBA middleweight champion it would be a fight that could resonate with the casual boxing fans, but it doesn’t work that way.

Who can Golovkin fight next?

golovkin97464By Thomas Cowan: Gennady “GGG” Golovkin produced another spectacular performance last weekend, destroying Daniel Geale in 3 rounds to defend his WBA middleweight title in style. Geale was a former unified champion and top 6 middleweight, Martin Murray being the non-titleholder that could be ranked above him, but Golovkin beat him easily.

Although Golovkin had previously destroyed Matthew Macklin, who was also a top 10 middleweight at the time, Geale was known for his toughness, but the Australian had no answer to Golovkin’s monstrous power.

Golovkin sold 8,500 tickets at Madison Square Garden, a massive number considering Geale is not well known in USA and Golovkin is not from New York or Puerto Rico, where most massive ticket sellers at the MSG tend to come from. HBO are expecting ratings of over 2 milion and these numbers show he has the potential to be at a star, but at 32, time is not on his side. He needs a big name and needs it now. So, who should he fight. More importantly, who will fight him?

Rafael doubts Roach will give Cotto the green light to fight Golovkin

roach6777By Chris Williams: Dan Rafael of ESPN believes that WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach, who was at the fight last Saturday night to scout out WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin as a potential opponent for Cotto, will go back to Cotto and tell him that it’s a great idea for him to fight Golovkin next in December.

Indeed, Rafael sees Roach choosing not to give Cotto the go ahead to take the fight with Golovkin due to the danger involved for him. It’s one thing Cotto beating up on a nearly 40-year-old man coming off of a 14 month layoff and 2 knee surgeries in Sergio Martinez, and it’s quite a different thing for Cotto to fight a live opponent in his prime in Golovkin.
