Miguel Cotto ordered to defend WBC title against Golovkin vs. Rubio winner

cotto56678By Cameron Gillon: The WBC have officially ordered that their middleweight champion Miguel Cotto defend his newly won title against the winner of October’s middleweight clash between IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Marco Antonio Rubio.

This is a good call from the WBC as Cotto is not seen as a real middleweight. He won the title off of a injury prone and past his prime Sergio Martinez. Rubio currently holds the WBC interim title which means this title will be on the line in his fight against Golovkin also so if Golovkin wins he will become Cotto’s mandatory challenger for the WBC belt and this will not amuse Miguel Cotto at all.

Golovkin-Rubio tickets go on sale next Wednesday, August 27th

golovkinBy Dan Ambrose: Tickets for the October 18th, “Mexican style” card between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) and WBC interim middleweight champion Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) will be going on sale next Wednesday, August 27th, according to Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. The Golovkin-Rubio fight will be staged at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

This is the perfect fight for both Golovkin and Rubio, as the winner of the fight stands to gain a lot. If Golovkin beats Rubio, which is likely given his power and talent advantage, he’ll become the mandatory challenger for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.

Golovkin will then be able to either force a fight against Cotto or watch him vacate instead of fighting, which will be minor victory for Golovkin. He’ll be seen by hardcore boxing fans as someone who Cotto avoided, and that obviously will help Golovkin’s career.

Will Gennady Golovkin be able to force the so called Big Names to fight him?

golovkin111By Gerardo Granados: Sooner than later, the so called big names might not find where to hide and could run out of excuses to not to fight the WBA – IBO Middleweight Champion of the World Gennady Golovkin (W30(27)-L0-D0). Next October 18th GGG will defend his championship against Marco Antonio Rubio (W59(51)-L6-D1) who is a quality middleweight contender that possesses the experience and hunger to compete against any belt holder. The Rubio vs Golovkin fight is no mismatch and you can bet it will be more competitive than the Manny Pacquiao vs Chris Algieri illusion.

It is a shame that Erik Morales doesn’t hold a belt at the middleweight division. Do the reader recalls who gave Danny Garcia his first shot at the title? After come back from an unofficial retirement, Terrible won a couple of fights and then challenged a young lion named Lucas Matthysse but the bout was cancelled due Lucas viral illness one week prior to their fight.

With Rubio’s WBC interim 160 pound title on the line for the fight in addition to Golovkin’s WBA title, we could in theory see a situation where Golovin could become Cotto’s WBC mandatory if he beats Rubio.

golovkin994By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golvkin will be defending his title against Marco Antonio Rubio on 10/18 in a fight televised by HBO from the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions wanted to get a big name like Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, but none of those fighters were options for the fight.

For Golovkin and K2, this is as good as it gets in terms of available opponents. Rubio fits their criteria for what they’re looking for given that the fights taking place in Southern California and K2 is looking to create new fans for Golovkin.

Rubio plans on taking advantage of Golovkin’s poor defense

Rubio says he sees a lot of flaws in Golovkin’s defense that he wants to take advantage of. He feels that the only reason Golovkin’s past opponents didn’t get to him was because they didn’t have the power and lacked the nerve.

Roach: Golovkin brings nothing to the table for Cotto, he’s a protected fighter

roach9By Dan Ambrose: Freddie Roach, the trainer for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs), says right now WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) isn’t someone they’re looking at to match up against Cotto.

Roach feels that Golovkin brings very little to a Cotto fight because he’s never fought anyone who he feels is a good fighter, and he doesn’t see Golovkin as a pay-per-view fighter. Surprisingly, Roach thinks that Golovkin is a protected fighter because he hasn’t fought the top guys like Peter Quillin and Daniel Jacobs.
