Is Golovkin too good for his own good?

golovkin5By Bob Smith: Like many Americans, I was ignorant of a virtually unknown middleweight titlist for all of the 2000s, and all the way into late 2012. Back then, the two major fights were Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez, and both were great and even electrifying fights.

On you tube in early 2013, I saw a tremendous victory of this nearly unknown fighter against Gregory Proksa, a fighter who fights in a style quite similar to Sergio Martinez and who was  a top 20 middleweight.

Golovkin stops Rubio; Walters destroys Donaire in 6 rounds

golovkin888By Chris Williams: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) scored his 18th consecutive knockout in stopping Marco Antonio Rubio (59-7-1, 51 KOs) in the 2nd round on Saturday night at the StubHub Center, in Carson, California.

Referee Jack Reiss called a halt to the fight at 1:19 of the 2nd. Rubio tried to protest the stoppage, but Reiss was having none of it. Rubio made a mistake of staying down too long.

Golovkin hurt Rubio with a big right uppercut followed by a big left hook to the head that sent Rubio down on his back. Rubio seemed to misjudge the count, as he stayed down until the count of 9 and failed to beat the count in getting back up to his feet.

Golovkin one big fight from becoming a mega-star

golovkin9(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) needs at least one big victory over a named opponent for him to become a mega-star, according to his trainer Abel Sanchez. He feels that the casual boxing fans are starting to recognize who Golovkin is after seeing him a number of times on HBO.

The hardcore boxing fans have known about Golovkin for a considerable amount of time. But what Golovkin needs is a victory over one of the big names like Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for him to get to the next level.

Rubio will need his A-game tonight against Golovkin!

rubio666(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Jim Dower: Things aren’t going well right now for the 34-year-old Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs). He lost his interim World Boxing Council middleweight title yesterday when he failed to make weight for his fight against WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) for their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Coming in overweight by nearly 2 pounds cost Rubio a big percentage of his $450,000 earnings for the fight. That wouldn’t be so bad if he had a reasonable chance of winning the fight, but he’s an underdog and likely to wind up as Golovkin’s 18th consecutive knockout victim.

Golovkin could fight Cotto-Canelo or Korobov-Lee winner, says Arum

golovkin5676(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: Tonight, WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) will be in the ring to face former WBC interim 160 pound champion Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Rubio lost his interim title last Friday when he failed to make weight at the weigh-in. Golovkin can still win the WBC interim title, but Rubio can’t. He can’t win Golovkin’s WBA title either.

Golovkin is expected to get through this fight with flying colors to move forward to what he hopes are bigger and better fights in the future. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum believes Golovkin has a chance to fight the winner of the proposed fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and challenger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Arum also thinks the winner of the December 13th fight between Matt Korobov and Andy Lee is a possibility for Golovkin.

Rubio fails to make weight, will receive hefty fine

rubio888(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) came in nearly two pounds over the weight limit for his title challenge against WBA 160 pound champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) earlier today at the weigh-in.

Rubio weighed in at 161.8 pounds, and missed the 160 pound limit by 1.81 pounds. Rubio will be fined $50,000 per pound over the limit. He had two hours to take off the weight, but he failed to do so. It’s unclear whether he made any effort or not. If so, it would be interesting to know how much weight.

Golovkin willing to fight Froch in UK

froch11By Scott Gilfoid: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler reportedly spoke to Eddie Hearn, the promoter for IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch, about the unbeaten Golovkin coming over to the UK to face the 37-year-old Froch in 2015.

There’s no word from Hearn whether Froch would be open to a fight like that, because Froch seems to be totally dialed into wanting a fight against former WBC 160 pound champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, even though Chavez Jr is no longer a champion and his stock has plummeted dramatically in the boxing world sense his loss to Serto Martinez in 2012.

Golovkin’s trainer not impressed with Rubio’s 51 knockouts

golovkin53(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for World Boxing Association (WBA) Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) doesn’t think much of challenger Marco Antonio Rubio’s 51 knockouts on his 59-6-1, 51 KO record.

Sanchez notes that those knockouts didn’t come against guys that were at the same talent level that Golovkin has. Rubio has scored a lot of knockouts, but against much weaker B, C and D level opposition during his long career. Rubio has had a lot of record-padding fights throughout his 14-year pro career, and he’s rarely mixed it up with really high quality opposition.

Golovkin wants Mayweather fight

golovkin1By Allan Fox: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) will be fighting Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) this Saturday night on HBO. But that’s not the fight that Golovkin is looking for.

Before Golovkin retires someday, he would like to face boxing’s biggest star in Floyd Mayweather Jr, according to his trainer Abel Sanchez. Fighting Mayweather has been a dream of Golovkin’s for some time now, but that dream is about to expire in the near future due to Mayweather nearing the end of his career.

“I think that’s Gennady’s dream fight [against Mayweather]. If it happens, great. If it doesn’t happen, we’re still going to have a great career,” said Sanchez to esnewsreporting.com.
