golovkin8By Raj Parmar: It seems that WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KO’s) is finally emerging into the spotlight that he has been yearning for in the past couple of years. As he prepares to make his title defense at the StubHub Center in California, USA on October 18 against contender Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KO’s), fans have been purchasing tickets for the fight at an extraordinary pace.

According to Golovkin’s promoter K2 Promotions, the fight has already sold half of its available tickets in about a week and is thus far the fastest selling boxing event ever at the StubHub Center.

“Since putting tickets on sale last Wednesday we’ve seen sales skyrocket, this is the fastest selling boxing event that’s been held at the StubHub Center,” said K2 Promotions’ managing director Tom Loeffler, “I strongly encourage boxing fans to purchase tickets in advance so they don’t miss out on this great night of boxing.”

The fight will air live on HBO and Golovkin will be carrying a 17 fight knockout streak into the ring with him against Rubio. His fan friendly style has no doubt caught on with fans of the sport and they are responding by putting down money to go see him fight in person.

Rumors have been floating around that Golovkin may possibly fight a major name next year such as WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, and it was generally thought that Gennady would need a major name such as Cotto in order to be able to attract a big audience. The surprising quickness of ticket sales however against a smaller name in Rubio is showing that Golovkin is well on his way to becoming an “A side” fighter on his own, without having to totally rely on the willingness of other major names in the sport to agree to fight him.
