Roach: Cotto beats Golovkin 100%

cotto75By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach is 100 percent certain that his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) will beat WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) if and when the two of them get around to facing each other in the future.

Roach says he’d like to train Cotto to defeat Golovkin, but he’s not the one who picks Cotto’s fights. That’s Gaby Penagaricano’s job, and unless he’s interested in making the Cotto-Golovkin fight, we probably will never get a chance to see it.

Chavez Jr doesn’t say why he sees Froch as a better opponent for him than Golovkin, but he did say that the fight would likely wind up with a lot of pay-per-view buys in the UK.

Golovkin’s promoter wants Cotto unification match next

1-IMG_7465By Dan Ambrose: With Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr both busy with scheduled fights, Tom Loeffler, the promoter for WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs), wants to setup a fight if possible between Golovkin and WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) Loeffler doesn’t want to have to wait until later this year for the Golovkin-Cotto fight. He wants it now.

Chavez Jr: If Golovkin knocks me out, he gets $2 million; he’s nothing special

chavez0By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 31 KOs) is once again unloading on WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) in giving his opinion of his talent. Chavez Jr sees Golovkin as nothing special as a fighter, and he says that they should fight each other.

If Golovkin wins, he gets $2 million. If he just wins a decision then nobody gets the money. It’s assumed that Chavez Jr would want to get $2 million if he knocks Golovkin out.

Golovkin will only be gaining $1 million if he were to KO Chavez Jr, who is known for having one of the strongest chins in the sport.

Peter Quillin needs to show more ambition

quillin33 (2)By Jon Ward: “Hey Kid Chocolate, how does it feel to be the best middleweight on the planet?” tweeted Oscar De La Hoya (Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin’s promoter) in July of 2013. Gennady Golovkin, the WBA champion had just moved to 27-0 with a display of body punching that nearly broke challenger Matthew Macklin in half and Sergio Martinez, still undefeated at middleweight then was universally recognized as the real 160lb champion at that time.

Quillin’s 28-0 record and WBO title weren’t insignificant despite the poor quality of his opposition and although De La Hoya’s comments were clearly not unconnected to his vested interest in Quillin’s career, there were many who saw the popular Chicago fighter as a future force in one of boxing’s most competitive divisions.

Atlas wants Golovkin to fight Quillin and Jacobs

1-01By Dan Ambrose: ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas went on a long rant last Friday night in talking about WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s recent 11th round stoppage win over an overmatched Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) in their fight in Monte Carlo last week in their fight on February 21st.

The fight was supposed to have been a competitive one in the eyes of some boxing fans, but it turned out to be a one-sided affair with Golovkin chasing an unwilling Murray around the ring for 10 rounds before Golovkin finally caught up to Murray in the 11th and stopped him on his feet.

WBC president: The winner of Cotto’s next fight will face Golovkin

After that fight, Cotto or whoever emerges as the winner of that fight will have to face the music of taking on the hard hitting Golovkin in a mandatory defense of the WBC 160 pound title.

Cotto still ranked above Golovkin in The Ring ratings

cotto644By Dan Ambrose: In an example of a rating system that appears to be behind what many boxing fans think, The Ring’s ratings still have WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) as their champion in the division.

Canelo will give Golovkin problems, says Rosado

1-IMG_7710By Dan Ambrose: Former Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) knockout victim Gabriel Rosado says from what he saw of Golovkin’s 11th round stoppage win over Martin Murray last Saturday night, Golovkin would have a lot of problems against former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs).

Rosado thinks Golovkin lacks defensive skills, as he was hit a lot by the bigger Murray last Saturday. Rosado thinks that Canelo would potentially be able to take advantage of Golovkin’s lack of defensive skills.
