Golovkin: Pacquiao lost control of Mayweather fight

1-IMG_8257By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin watched last Saturday’s mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, and he noted that the Filipino star lost control over the fight.

Golovkin felt that Mayweather’s intelligence was the key to him beating Pacquiao.
I’m not sure that Pacquiao really ever did have control of the fight. Mayweather won the first two rounds before giving up the 3rd round.

Golovkin still hoping to get Mayweather fight

golovkin883By Scott Gilfoid: In less than two weeks from now, WBA and WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) will be defending his titles against Willie Monroe Jr. (19-1, 6 KOs) on May 16th at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Depending on how tricky Monroe is, this could be a tough fight for Golovkin.

Golovkin says he wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. because it’s his dream fight. Golovkin had recently been interested in fighting both Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, but Mayweather’s win last Saturday over Pacquiao appears to have changed all that. Now Golovkin is only dialed in for a fight against Mayweather.

Golovkin promising a big drama show against Monroe on May 16th

golovkin094By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) will be looking to turn his fight against the slick southpaw Willie Monroe Jr. (19-1, 6 KOs) into a big drama show a week and a half from now on May 16th at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Golovkin has been training extensively at tracking down speedy fighters like Monroe during this camp, and he feels he’s ready to make this an exciting fight when he faces Monroe on HBO World Championship Boxing.

Golovkin didn’t have to take the fight against Monroe, as he could have selected an opponent less mobile who fights out of the orthodox fighting stance. But Golovkin wanted to face the style that would give him the most trouble, and he feels that Monroe potentially could be that type of fighter.

You really can’t blame Golovkin for wanting to face someone with a difficult fighting style because he’s had things pretty easy in the past 18 fights with him knocking out everybody he’s faced. Monroe could be the guy that will give Golovkin some rounds if nothing else.

It’s a potentially life changing opportunity for the twenty-eight year old Monroe, and earlier this week he took some time away from his training camp to talk with me over the phone.

Atlas: Mayweather should fight Golovkin, not Pacquiao again

1-MAYPAC-FIGHTNIGHT-TRAPPFOTOS-5147By Dan Ambrose: After the disappointing performance we saw from Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao last Saturday night, ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas has no interest in seeing a second fight between the two fighters. He feels that nobody wants to see Mayweather fight Pacquiao again after what took place last Saturday. Atlas thinks both guys disappointed the paying the fans with how they fought.

Instead of seeing a rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao, Atlas says he’d like to see Mayweather fight WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

Roach: Pacquiao had no idea who Golovkin was when he visited the Wildcard Gym

golovkin42222By Chris Williams: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin recently visited the Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles, California to see WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach says that Pacquiao had no idea who Golovkin was during the visit.

Pacquiao didn’t realize that he was meeting the fighter who arguably is the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet. Golovkin recently said he’d like to fight Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. at 154 if they were up for it. This is a weight class that both fighters have fought at before so it wouldn’t be a great ordeal for them to meet him at this weight.

Golovkin’s trainer wants Cotto fight before end of year

golovkin883By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez is hoping that a fight between Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) and WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) can take place this year in September in New York. However, Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler is reporting that Cotto’s people are trying to work a deal with them.

Cotto may be looking to have Golovkin step aside so that he can defend his WBC title against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez later in September.

Golovkin still interested in facing Mayweather or Pacquiao at 154

golovkin101By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) hasn’t given up on his dream of facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao in the future. Golovkin says he’s still willing to drain down to 154 to fight both of them.

It shouldn’t be an issue for either fighter because both have fought at junior middleweight before. Pacquiao captured the WBC junior middleweight title in 2010 after beating welterweight Antonio Margarito at a catch-weight of 150 pounds.

Froch’s options for next fight not so good after Chavez Jr loss

froch7343By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch had been hoping to get a nice payday fight against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr for later this year.

Froch had thought that the fight against the 29-year-old Chavez Jr. would play out as a big deal both in the United States and in the UK on pay-per-view. That dream fell apart last Saturday night when Chavez Jr. was dismantled by light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara in his quit job after the 9th round.

Golovkin says he’s not surprised Chavez Jr. lost, still wants to fight him

chavez700By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) says he wasn’t surprised that the popular Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) was stopped in the 9th round last Saturday night against the hard hitting Polish slugger Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs).

Golovkin chocked up the victory to experience for Fonfara despite the fact that he has far fewer fights as a pro than Chavez Jr.
