Golovkin still hoping to get Mayweather fight

golovkin883By Scott Gilfoid: In less than two weeks from now, WBA and WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) will be defending his titles against Willie Monroe Jr. (19-1, 6 KOs) on May 16th at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Depending on how tricky Monroe is, this could be a tough fight for Golovkin.

Golovkin says he wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. because it’s his dream fight. Golovkin had recently been interested in fighting both Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, but Mayweather’s win last Saturday over Pacquiao appears to have changed all that. Now Golovkin is only dialed in for a fight against Mayweather.

“Of course, it is my dream fight. Obviously, Floyd, he is a great champion, and a little bit different style,” Golovkin said during a conference call this week. “Floyd, he’s a smart guy. He does a lot of moving. For my style, a little bit different, I like drama show, I like real fight, like close fight. I want show, big show; big drama show!”

Actually this would be a very good fight for Mayweather to take in September or even next year. I’d much rather see Mayweather fight Golovkin in September than Khan. A Mayweather-Khan fight would likely be really boring due to Khan’s new style of fighting on his back foot and not taking any chances.

Khan’s new style is very, very boring as far as I’m concerned. He still does the head-locks, the shoving, the pulling down on the head, the holding and hitting, but now he backs away quickly when his opponents look to land anything. If the backing away thing was the only negative part of Khan’s game, it wouldn’t be so bad, but he does a lot of other stuff.

Mayweather would really surprise a lot of boxing fans if he put his unbeaten record on the line to face Golovkin because no one expects him do, and the Kazakhstan fighter appears to have everyone scared of him at middleweight.

Mayweather would impress a lot of people if he elected to fight Golovkin. By now, Mayweather has to have sized up Golovkin to determine whether or not he could beat him.

If Mayweather felt that he could defeat Golovkin, like he did with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, I could see him taking that fight in order to capture another division world title and prove that he’s good enough to beat him. The fight would have to take place at 154 with a possible rehydration clause to keep Golovkin from ballooning up in weight to the 170s after he makes weight.
