Golovkin: Pacquiao lost control of Mayweather fight

1-IMG_8257By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin watched last Saturday’s mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, and he noted that the Filipino star lost control over the fight.

Golovkin felt that Mayweather’s intelligence was the key to him beating Pacquiao.
I’m not sure that Pacquiao really ever did have control of the fight. Mayweather won the first two rounds before giving up the 3rd round.

Each time Mayweather would lose a round, he would bounce back to win the next one by reasserting his dominance. Pacquiao tried to put some rounds together, but he couldn’t get near enough to Mayweather to land his shots on a frequent basis.

The only time that Pacquiao was really landing with any kind of regularity was when Mayweather would back up against the ropes and wait on him. Mayweather might have needed a rest break because otherwise he was wasting his time by backing up against the ropes.

“Yes. Everybody wanted the fight for the last five years,” Golovkin said. “I think Floyd’s too smart. This is Floyd’s style; he doesn’t take too many shots. Floyd’s too smart, he’s a great boxer, he’s number one in the world. Pacquiao, I think he loses control of the fight. He could not do anything against Floyd. Pacquiao is very good, but it was a very smart fight for Floyd,” Golovkin said.

Golovkin is right about Mayweather being too smart. He was clearly smarter than Pacquiao in that fight, and he was also smarter than Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach. Pacquiao couldn’t do anything during the course of any of the rounds, and he always had to wait until the round was over before Roach could give him instructions to try and negate what Mayweather was doing. But Pacquiao didn’t have the arm length for him to connect with his shots.

Mayweather was able to lean backwards to make many of Pacquiao’s shots to miss badly. Pacquiao did the same things over and over again no matter what Roach was telling him in between rounds. This makes you wonder whether Pacquiao follows the instructions that he’s given by Roach. Pacquiao looked like he was on cruise control most of the fight, doing whatever he wanted instead of following Roach’s instructions.

Golovkin went on to say that he wants to fight Mayweather in the future, as he sees it as a dream of his to take that fight. Golovkin, however, might be considered too big and too dangerous for Mayweather. While Golovkin is the same size as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a fighter that beat in 2013, Golovkin isn’t as vulnerable as Canelo and he doesn’t have his fan base. For that reason Golovkin is probably wasting his time thinking he can fight Mayweather.
