Golovkin’s promoter says he can put together HBO-backed financial deal for Andy Lee-Golovkin fight

lee564By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golokvin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions says he can work with HBO to put together an HBO financed deal to put together a Golovkin vs. Andy Lee unification fight. Lee, 30, recently fought to a 12 round draw against former WBO 160lb champion Peter Quillin last Saturday night on April 11th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

While some boxing fans thought that Lee was robbed in that fight, it was clear to a lot of fans that Lee had simply given up too many rounds in the early part of the fight for him to get the ‘W’ in the fight. Lee was knocked down twice by Quillin in getting dropped in the 1st and 3rd rounds.

Cotto chooses not to face Triple G, will fight Geale next

cotto57By Bradley Dee: Almost one year ago, Miguel Cotto won the true middleweight crown from WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez last year in June. The version of Sergio Martinez that he won the crown from was a shopworn, injured Sergio Martinez as was evident from his immediate inability to slip and move away from punches.

Not taking anything away from the victory, this would have still been a decent win, however instead of defending the middleweight crown, Cotto has chosen to sit on the belt and price himself out of major fights and fight lesser opponents.

Chavez Jr: Why doesn’t Golovkin fight Kovalev?

chavez7By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) closed the door on him fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin for his next fight after next Saturday’s fight against light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) in saying that he wants to fight super middleweight champion Carl Froch.

Chavez Jr. says that Golovkin needs to fight other opposition to make him name known, and he thinks that he should either move up to 168 or 175 in order to find more fights. One name that Chavez Jr thinks that Golovkin should fight is IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. That’s a fight that Chavez Jr thinks Golovkin needs to take to build up his name and popularity before he faces him. Further, Chavez Jr says that Golovkin should try and fight the winner of tonight’s fight between WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee and Peter Quillin.

Gennady Golovkin’s career: A microcosm of the state of boxing

golovkin7356By Tom Hochbaum: Unfortunately, the following situation exemplifies the state of the sport of boxing right now: The best fighter in the Middleweight division is not currently considered the lineal champion, and it is not known if he will get a shot at becoming the lineal champ in the near future.

The fighter I am referring to is obviously the undefeated WBA and IBO Middleweight Champion from Kazakhstan, Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin. While it is quite frustrating as a boxing fan to watch an exciting fighter on a 19 fight knockout streak struggle to make fights against the biggest names in the sport, I think it is important not to oversimplify when evaluating the reasons for this.

Ward, Froch, GGG, Chavez Jr.

froch67777By Robert “Lead Right” Elmore: Before the most recent comment from super middleweight champ Carl Froch about wanting to fight Andre Ward in Nottingham, Froch expressed not wanting to fight Ward. There are two reasons Froch didn’t want to rematch Ward.

One, he believes that Ward doesn’t anything financially to the table. Two, Ward’s fighting style gave him problems. Froch was not able to tee off on Ward. But while Froch is claiming that Ward can’t sell tickets, we really don’t know how big of a ticket seller Froch is outside of his hometown of Nottingham.

Hypocrisy in boxing

golovkin94By Niall Kaye: For the fighters of today it is now de rigueur to use the clichéd excuse of boxing being a ‘business’ as a defense mechanism against questions regarding future opponents. The sheer hypocrisy which abounds our sport is startling.

A relevant example comes in the form of Gennady Golovkin, a man who has instilled fear into the occupants of middleweight, the like of which few before him have replicated. Myriads of fighters and trainers have attempted to defame and besmirch his successes, all with a singular goal in mind: to avoid fighting him.

Martin Murray wants Golovkin rematch at super middleweight

golovkin42222By Scott Gilfoid: After coming up short last month in getting stopped in the 11th round in his fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) on February 21st, #4 WBC Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) says he’d like to get another shot at fighting Golovkin, but this time super middleweight.

Murray, 32, believes it would be a different fight if he were to take the 5’10 ½” Golovkin at 168, presumably because he wouldn’t have to struggle to take the weight off like he did in cutting down to 160.

Murray has had three shots at world titles in the middleweight division, he’s failed to win a world title. He still believes he has opportunities in this fight class, but he thinks he would have a lot of chances at 168 as well if he were to move up. Murray seems torn about whether he should move up or not.

Froch to fight in September, Chavez Jr, Ward, Golovkin and DeGale possibilities

froch11By Scott Gilfoid: After sitting out of action for a year after his win over fellow Brit George Groves last year in May, WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) plans on returning to the ring in September of this year, possibly against Andre Ward, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr or James DeGale.

The Chavez Jr fight is the one that Froch wants, even though Chavez Jr has done zero with his career ever since his 7th round stoppage win over Andy Lee in June of 2012. We’re talking about a three year rut for Chavez Jr, and Froch wants to fight him. That’s very interesting and very telling.

Froch: Golovkin is quite a small kid, Murray wouldn’t last more than 3 rounds against me

froch552By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs dismissed the talk of him potentially facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) in the near future. Froch feels that the 5’10 ½” Golovkin is a small fighter, even though he’s only two and a half inches shorter than the 6’1” Froch.

Golovkin would be giving up five inches in each to Froch if they were to face each other. However, we saw Froch get knocked down by the 5’11 ½” George Groves in their first fight in November 2013.
