Monroe Jr: Canelo beats GGG!

1-golovkin3 (11)By Dan Ambrose: Willie Monroe Jr. was very impressed with the performance of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) last Saturday night in his 12 round unanimous decision victory over Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) to win the WBC middleweight title.

Monroe Jr. came away from watching the fight with the belief that the 25-year-old Canelo would definitely beat Golovkin when/if they face each other. Monroe Jr. lost to Golovkin earlier this year in getting stopped in the 6th round last May at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Andre Ward sees Kovalev as better than Golovkin

ward4By Chris Williams: Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) gave it his best shot at trying to get IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) to face him at super middleweight for what would have been a big fight on HBO pay-per-view, but the Kazakhstan fighter failed to accept Ward’s offer to meet him in the ring.

Ward says he still has the texts from Golovkin’s management. Ward just thinks that Golovkin doesn’t want any part of fighting him. However, Ward isn’t too worried about it, because he’s moving up to light heavyweight and will be facing IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (28-0-1, 25 KOs) later on in 2016 if Kovalev beats Jean Pascal (30-3-1, 17 KOs) in their rematch on January 30th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Canelo: I don’t have to do what Golovkin wants

canelo100By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) made a lot of fans happy last Saturday night when he announced that he’s ready and willing to fight WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) to show fans that he’s not afraid to fight anybody. Well, now it looks like Canelo is setting up conditions for Golovkin to meet in order to fight him.

If Golovkin wants the fight with him, he might need to fight Canelo at 155lbs, the weight class that Canelo has created recently in his last four fights. It seems that he likes to fight at 155lbs, and he doesn’t see any reason why he should change that, even though he’s now the WBC middleweight champion.

Is De La Hoya avoiding Canelo vs. GGG clash?

de la hoya84By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: This is the beauty about boxing. It’s unpredictable. And sometimes my theories on things are wrong, but I enjoy attempting so here we go. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez win over Miguel Cotto for the WBC middleweight title was big, but it also put Canelo in direct line to face mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin (GGG, aka Trip).

So far Oscar De La Hoya has been mum on his next move. However, his moves could be decided for him by the WBC if he doesn’t make up his mind. Canelo has 15 days to decide to fight Trip or be stripped of his title. My spidey senses tell me Oscar is trying to maneuver around that mandatory bout. Enter Floyd Mayweather.

Golovkin’s trainer: Canelo has 15 days to make up mind for fight

1-canelo-cotto-results (18)By Dan Ambrose: If Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) wants to hold onto his newly won WBC middleweight title then the clock is ticking for him, as he only has 15 days to make a decision whether to keep the WBC title or defend it against mandatory challenger Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs), and one of those days are now gone.

Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez doesn’t mean to put pressure on the 25-year-old Canelo, but he says that Canelo has to make his mind up within two weeks whether he’s going to face Golovkin or give up his WBC title.

Oscar Officially “Marinates” Canelo vs. Golovkin…

canelo93(Photo credit: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports/Golden Boy Promotions) By J Caldwell: Theoretically, a “possible” bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1 32 KOs) and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) should be taking place in the spring of 2016. What you’d see on paper with a fight between these two combatants is this: 1) Both fighters would be coming-off their two most impressive victories to date; 1) Both fighters, presumably, would be at the peaks of their boxing careers (25 for Canelo, and a respective 34 for Golovkin); and last, but certainly not least 3) Both fighters would be highly ambitious enough to test-out their skills on to one another. “If you want me to fight him [Golovkin] now, I’ll put the gloves on and fight him now. He’s a great champion, but right now I’ll put the gloves on and fight him,” Canelo said last night following his rather impressive win over a game Cotto at the Mandalay Bay Casino, Las Vegas, NV.

Canelo: “I’m ready for Golovkin,” won’t vacate WBC title

canelo663222By Dan Ambrose: Newly crowned WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) says he has no intentions of vacating his WBC 160lb title if he’s told by the World Boxing Council that he must fight WBC mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin next.

Canelo says he’ll take the fight. However, when asked if he will require that Golovkin and other middleweights fight him at a catch-weight of 155lbs, Canelo dodged the question, saying “Right now I’m going to rest. But I will say this: I’m going to continue to do my best so that the people can enjoy my fights and enjoy boxing.”

Marquez: Canelo can beat Golovkin, but not Mayweather

canelo1(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Allan Fox: Boxing great Juan Manuel Marquez thinks that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) showed enough improvement last night with his win over Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) to suggest that he’ll beat IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) if the two middleweights face each other.

Marquez thinks Canelo can beat Golovkin if he fights defensively by making the Kazakhstan fighter miss with his power punches like he was making Cotto miss last night in their fight on HBO PPV from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya won’t commit to Canelo vs. Golovkin fight

de la hoya555By Dan Ambrose: After Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) defeated Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) tonight by a 12 round unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC middleweight title, Canelo said that he’ll fight IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) next if that’s what the boxing fans want from him.

However, it looks now like Canelo spoke too soon, because his promoter Oscar De La Hoya, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said at the post-fight press conference that there are other fights for Canelo at 154 and 160. De La Hoya said they’ll be sitting down with Canelo to decide on who his next opponent should be.

Golovkin: Canelo lost too much weight, not good

1-Alvarez-Cotto (1)By Dan Ambrose: Like a lot of people who saw Friday’s weigh-in, IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin thinks Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) took too much weight off to get down to the 155lb catch-weight for his fight tonight against Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) on HBO PPV from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo looked painfully thin in coming in at 155lbs for the catch-weight, and had the look of someone who had to cut a lot of weight to make the limit. Considering that Canelo tends to rehydrate into the mid-170s, he possibly lost as much as 20 pounds. Cotto looked great, like he was ready to step inside the ring and fight hard for 12 rounds. You could tell that Cotto wasn’t going to regain much weight after he rehydrates because he looked pretty much like he always does for his fights.
