Canelo’s trainer: If GGG wants fight, it’ll be at 155lbs

canelo974(Photo credit: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports/Golden Boy Promotions) By Tim Fletcher: Tonight will be Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s fourth consecutive fight at 155lbs when he steps inside the ring to fight Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) in their fight on HBO pay-per-view.

While it was hoped that Canelo would finally fight at the full weight of 160lbs for the middleweight division if he gets past Cotto, it doesn’t appear that’s going to happen. Fans want Canelo to fight IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) next in a middleweight clash.

Zero chance GGG gets Cotto-Canelo winner

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Tim Fletcher: It looks like IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady GGG Golovkin won’t be getting a shot at the winner of the Miguel Cotto vs. Saul Canelo Alvarez fight in their next fight.

According to Dan Rafael, there’s rematch language written in the contract on both sides that suggests that we’ll be seeing a second fight between the two catch-weight middleweights rather than the winner taking on Golovkin.

Golovkin anxious to fight again

1-golovkin-lem (5)

By Tim Fletcher: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) says all the talk about the clash between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) and Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) this Saturday night has him chomping at the bit wanting to get inside the ring as soon as possible so that he can start fighting again.

Golovkin is coming off of an impressive stoppage win over IF Middleweight champion David Lemieux last October in Golovkin’s first PPV fight on HBO, and he can’t wait to get another big fight.

Ideally, Golovkin would like to fight the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen unless someone like Canelo opts to take the fight out of pressure from the boxing public.

Golovkin and the Willie Monroe Effect…

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy J Caldwell: The problem with elite boxers with an endless list of no name fighters to his or her credit is this: It generally tends to rub diehard boxing fans the wrong way.

Clearly, the guy from Kazakhstan, Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) can fight: With an amateur record of over 340 wins, and a KO ratio in the professional ranks of well over 90%, the numbers speak for themselves. The argument, however, then turns to the ubiquitous question, presumably, most prize fighters hate being asked…which is this: Just who has he [Golovkin] been beating?

De La Hoya wants Golovkin vs. Canelo to “MARINATE” for 1 to 1.5 years

de la hoya84By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya finally came out and said he doesn’t plan on letting his golden goose Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) face IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in his next fight after his bout next Saturday night against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) on November 21st.

De La Hoya says he wants to wait a year to a year and a half before he gives the green light to the 25-year-old Canelo to face the 33-year-old Golovkin. De La Hoya thinks that by letting the Canelo vs. Golovkin fight build over time, it’ll be a bigger fight once they do eventually face each other in the future.

Erislandy Lara moving to 160, targeting Golovkin

lara665By Chris Williams: With 32-year-old WBA World junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (21-2-2, 12 KOs) having exhausted all the possibilities of big money fights in the 154lb division after his controversial 12 round split decision loss to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last year in July 2014, Lara is reportedly going to be moving up to the middleweight division [160] after his title defense this month against 39-year-old #8 WBA Jan Zaveck (35-3, 19 KOs) on Wednesday, November 25th on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN at the Hialeah Park Race Track, in Hialeah, Florida.

Golovkin is the No.1 P4P fighter, says Holyfield

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield says he personally rates IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) as the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter in boxing rather than WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez, who Ring Magazine has as their No.1 P4P pounder.

“In boxing should not be afraid of no one, to be the best should fight the best,” said Holyfield via ESPN Deportes. “So I think GGG is the best pound for pound fighter in the world right now. He is the only middleweight that does not avoid anyone, whether you ask tells you ok, let’s do it,” Holyfield.

Golovkin’s trainer responds to Mayweather

1-GolovkinLemieux_Hoganphotos2By Dan Ambrose: This week, Floyd Mayweather Jr. said he wants to see IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) take risks with his career by moving up in weight to the 168lb division and face the bigger Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) in order to prove himself to him that he’s as good as people think he is.

Until Golovkin makes this move in facing Ward at a higher weight, Mayweather says he won’t be convinced that he’s as good as people think he is. Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez was asked about Mayweather’s comments, and he said without mentioning Ward’s name specifically that Golovkin can’t face fighters that have legal issues or injuries.

Ward had promotional problems with his former promoter for a while. Ward also had injury problems in the past, including right now that has kept him from fighting.

“It’s all about taking risks and taking chances,” Mayweather said to Fighthype.com. “I did it. I took risks. I took chances. I’m just waiting to see if Triple G is going to go up and fight Andre Ward. I’m going to be convinced when he can go up and beat Andre Ward. Until then, I’m not convinced,” Mayweather said.
