Roach: Brook is too small for Golovkin

Image: Roach: Brook is too small for Golovkin

By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it seems that it doesn’t really matter that welterweight Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) is reportedly weighing 178 pounds right now and is heavier than IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs). The general consensus is that Brook is just too little to be fighting Golovkin, and will be knocked out on September 10 when the two of them fight each other at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Trainer Freddie Roach also believes that the 30-year-old Brook is just too small to have a chance of beating Triple G. Roach sees the Golovkin vs. Brook fight as very similar to the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan fight that took place last May. I bet that doesn’t make Brook feel too good in seeing himself being mentioned in the same light as welterweight Khan, because the hulking super middleweight-sized Canelo knocked him out in the 6th round.

Crawford hopes to replace Mayweather and Pacquiao

crawford873

By Allan Fox: WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford (28-0, 20 KOs) is hoping to take a big step forward in his career tonight in his fight against WBC 140lb champion Viktor Postol (28-0, 12 KOs) in their fight on HBO PPV. Crawford sees himself as the replacement for superstars Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the sport. Crawford and Postol will be fighting on HBO pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Crawford is around the same age as both of them when they became huge PPV attractions. Crawford hasn’t shown the same kind of talent that we saw from Pacquiao and Mayweather when they both young at 28. However, it might not matter that Crawford doesn’t have the talent of the guys he replaces at the top of the sport.

There’s an empty spot at the top right now and the boxing public may be willing to accept a lesser fighter like Crawford as the top guy.

Roach picks Postol over Crawford

roach86

By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach believes his fighter WBC light welterweight champion Viktor Postol (28-0, 12 KOs) is better than WBO 140lb champion Terence Crawford (28-0, 20 KOs), and he sees the 5’11” Ukrainian beating him on Saturday night.

Roach says he saw the 28-year-old Crawford coming out of the sauna this week, and he thinks he could be battling with the weight to get down to the 140lb limit for the fight. This could play into Postol’s hands if Crawford is weakened from losing weight.

Roach: Arum needs Crawford to beat Postol

roach75555

By Chris Williams: WBC light welterweight champion Viktor Postol’s trainer Freddie Roach says Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is hoping that his fighter unbeaten WBO 140lb champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (28-0, 20 KOs) defeats Postol in their fight this Saturday night on July 23 on HBO pay-per-view, because he needs him to win in order to turn him into a PPV attraction. Arum thinks that Crawford can become Top Rank’s next PPV fighter. For that to have any chance of taking place, Crawford will need to defeat the unbeaten 32-year-old Postol in their fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“The main thing is he has the height advantage and the reach advantage, and he needs to use that,” said Roach about Postol to Fighthype. “He does have good power in his right hand. I think people underestimate the power in his right hand. He does have knockout power. The thing is he won’t use his right hand until he knows he has you in the right distance and the right timing. He’s very good at that. He’s patient, he takes his time. He’s a very intelligent fighter. That’s why I like him so much. He doesn’t just go out there and try to get lucky He’s thinking all the time,” said Roach.

Roach: Kell Brook is desperate for a payday

Image: Roach: Kell Brook is desperate for a payday

By Scott Gilfoid: Trainer Freddie Roach believes the only reason that IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) is moving up in weight two divisions to take on unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) in their fight on September 10 is because he’s desperate for a payday and willing to take the risk because of that.

Roach notes that Brook has never been able to get a fight against Britain’s Amir Khan, and that other fighters from his division have avoided him pretty much. So instead of sticking it out at 147 in taking the guys that are willing to fight him, Brook decided to take a major risk in moving up thirteen pounds to face Golovkin at 160lbs without the benefit of a catch-weight.

Roach talks Pacquiao vs. Canelo fight

canelo765555

By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach says he has no fear of his fighter Manny Pacquiao taking on middleweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Roach’s main concern in a fight between these two stars is there would need to be a rehydration limit to keep the 25-year-old Canelo from rehydrating 30 pounds after they weigh-in the day before the fight.

Roach’s been vocal about his belief that Canelo rehydrated 30 pounds last November after making weight for his fight against Roach’s fighter Miguel Cotto. Canelo weighed in at 155lbs for the fight, but then on fight night, he looked huge compared to Cotto, who was around 164.

Canelo looked a lot more than 10 pounds heavier than Cotto in that fight, which means that he would have had to have rehydrated into the 180s on fight night. Roach thinks Canelo was at 185lbs in the fight. Cotto was so much smaller than his shots literally bounced off the tank-like Canelo without slowing him up for even a second.

Roach: Golovkin must beat Ward to become #1 fighter

roach55

By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach doesn’t believe that IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin can be the guy that takes the baton from Floyd Mayweather Jr. to carry the sport of boxing on his back as the No.1 star. The main reason why Roach doubts that Golovkin can be the guy to take the reins from Mayweather is due to his lack of competition at middleweight.

There aren’t enough names for Golovkin to fight in the 160lb division for him to become a huge super star and the top pound-for-pound fighter. Roach thinks Golovkin needs to move up in weight to fight light heavyweight Andre Ward. He thinks that would be a good fight for Golovkin to prove himself as the top fighter in boxing.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. J’León Love possible for July 16 or 23

Image: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. J'León Love possible for July 16 or 23

By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach says former WBC super middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. 49-2-1, 32 KOs) is doing well in training and showing up every day for the sessions without skipping days. Roach says the now 30-year-old Chavez Jr. could be back in the ring next month on July 16 or 23 against J’León Love (22-1, 12 KOs) in either Texas or Los Angeles, California.

Chavez Jr. has not fought since July of last year in beating the much lighter Marcos Reyes by a 10 round unanimous decision. The fight was much closer than the lopsided scores (97-92 and 98-91) handed in by two of the judges. The score that best reflected the fight was the 96-93 score in favor of Chavez Jr.

Roach: McGregor got beat up a little bit by my guys in sparring

roach71

By Eric Baldwin: Trainer Freddie Roach says UFC fighter Conor McGregor got beat up a little bit while sparring at Wildcard West by a couple of guys. One of them was Roach’s fighter South African Chris Van Heerden. McGregor is likely going to be facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. very soon.

Mayweather said so himself according to Roach. Mayweather told Roach that he can make a lot of money if he works as McGregor’s trainer for this fight because it’s going to be a fight that will be taking place.

Roach to speak with Pacquiao about Canelo fight

roach75

By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach still hasn’t given up on his star fighter Manny Pacquiao making a comeback in the near future for one last fight. Pacquiao has already said that he’s probably not going to come back to the sport to resume his career unless he misses it. What makes a comeback unlikely is Pacquiao being elected into the senate in the Philippines last May.

Pacquiao is now a senator in his home country, and he’s got huge responsibilities that go with this job. Roach wants to get Pacquiao to come back for a fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Roach says the fight with Canelo was offered to him, and he want to see what Pacquiao thinks about it when they meet each face to face in the future.
