Mayweather wants Roach to train McGregor

roach55

By Allan Fox: In a strange move, Floyd Mayweather Jr. reportedly told trainer Freddie Roach to agree to train UFC fighter Conor McGregor if he’s asked by him to train him for their proposed fight. It’s unknown why Mayweather wants Roach to train the 27-year-old McGregor for a fight between them.

It could be that Mayweather might think having Roach’s name associated with McGregor could help pump up interest in the Mayweather-McGregor fight. It sounds good if the media can mention Roach as the trainer for McGregor rather than some obscure boxing trainer or an MMA trainer with little knowledge of the sport.

Roach waiting for Pacquiao to call for Mayweather rematch

Floyd Mayweather

By Allan Fox: Trainer Freddie Roach says he’s waiting to see what happens with former eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao to see if he’ll come back to the sport for one more fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. to that he can avenge his loss to him. According to Roach, Mayweather has twice come to his gym recently without saying about a rematch against Pacquiao.

Roach thinks it’s sort of unusual that Mayweather is turning up his Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles, California after all this time. Roach would like more than anything to have Mayweather fight Pacquiao a second time because he believes a healthy Pacquiao would have a good chance of beating him.

Roach thinks Khan should stay away from Pacquiao

khan7633By Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-4, 19 KOs) surprised many people this past week when he said he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao. Khan sees the 37-year-old Pacquiao as being at the top of his list for guys he wants to fight.

It would have been a realistic choice for Khan if he hadn’t been knocked out cold by WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last Saturday night in the 6th round in their fight on HBO pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach thinks Khan might have been feeling the aftereffects from his knockout when he said he wants to fight Pacquiao. As far as Roach is concerned, the last guy that Khan needs to be fighting right now is Pacquiao.

Roach says Pacquiao vs. Canelo offered to him

roach65By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach said he was asked by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum if Manny Pacquiao could fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Roach said he wanted to see how Canelo did against welterweight Amir Khan first before he made the decision in the Pacquiao-Canelo fight.

Now that Roach has seen Canelo’s fight last Saturday night, he didn’t see anything in his game that Pacquiao couldn’t handle as long as he stays disciplined for 12 rounds. Roach says he had Khan up five rounds to zero at the time that Canelo knocked Khan out in the 6th round.

Roach says a fight between Pacquiao and Canelo can get made if they get Canelo to agree to a rehydration limit that would keep him from weighing more than 165lbs on the day of the fight. This is the only way a fight between Canelo and Pacquiao can be fair, says Roach.

Roach says Canelo-Golovkin needs to marinate more

roach762By Dan Ambrose: Freddie Roach, the trainer for Miguel Cotto, says the proposed mega-fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin needs more time to marinate so that it can become a bigger fight. Roach thinks it’s a good idea for Golovkin and Canelo to fight on the same card against other opponents so that their fight can be built up more to make it bigger.

Roach doesn’t say how there would be enough money to put Canelo and Golovkin on the same card, as both are headliner type fighters at this point in their careers. Golovkin would obviously need to be second fiddle to Canelo, and that might not be a good idea if you’re Golovkin.

“Roach says might be best idea to put both @GGGBoxing and @Canelo on separate fights in next card to build the fight up,” said Lance Pugmire of the LA Times on his Twitter.

Roach waiting for the next Pacquiao to come into his gym

roach432By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach says he won’t be retiring from training fighters despite the loss of his number one guy Manny Pacquiao, who retired after his win over Tim Bradley last Saturday night. Roach’s career as a trainer soured after Pacquiao came through his door into his Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles, California.

Having Pacquiao as one of his fighters has been like a huge billboard advertisement for the last 10 years, and it has helped attract a large number of well-known fighters to Roach’s gym to be trained by him. Roach is hoping that another Pacquiao will come to him so he can start in where he left off with Pacquiao.

Roach wants Pacquiao to continue his career

pac55By Allan Fox: Manny Pacquiao disappointed many of his boxing fans last Saturday night by revealing that he’ll be retiring from boxing. Pacquiao went out on a high note in defeating Tim Bradley (33-2-1, 13 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the final seconds of the 12th round, Pacquiao appeared to hurt Bradley with a big left hand to the head that sent Bradley face first through the ropes. Bradley was able to regain his composure somewhat as the last second ticked off in the round. However, he was clearly staggered by the shot.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach believes that Pacquiao still has a lot left in the tank, and he doesn’t see why he needs to retire right now because he still has enough left to win a couple of more fights before he should retire.

Roach wants rehydration limit for Canelo vs. Pacquiao

roach432By Dan Ambrose: While many boxing fans are talking about this Saturday’s fight for Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) being potentially the last of his long 21-year pro career, his trainer Freddie Roach and promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank have been talking up a storm about a hoped for fight between Pacquiao and Golden Boy Promotions star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs).

Pacquiao is facing Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 Kos) this Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view. However, Roach and Arum have been stoking the fires of a big money PPV fight between Pacquiao and Canelo by talking about wanting to make that fight happen. However, Roach took it to another level today in saying that he would push for a rehydration limit for the fight if takes place.

Roach: I think Pacquiao can out-box Canelo

roach43By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach says he thinks Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) will out-box Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if that fight takes place. Roach says that Pacquiao has always done well against bigger fighters, and he thinks that Pacquiao could do the job on Canelo as well with his speed.

It’s unknown at this point if Pacquiao will continue his pro career beyond his fight this Saturday night against Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. If Pacquiao does continue fighting, then Canelo is definitely a possibility for him.

Roach excited about Pacquiao’s speed and power in camp

YouTube video

By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach is excited about what he’s seeing from former eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) as he gets ready for what could be the final fight of his long 21-year pro career against Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) on April 9 on HBO pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach believes that Pacquiao has the speed to overwhelm Bradley in this fight. Roach has been seeing that speed from Pacquiao during this training camp. I guess Pacquiao is training at a high level for this camp because his torn right rotator cuff is now completely healed after surgery.
