Gennady Golovkin: Three potential opponents for next fight

1-Golovkin_Wade_AY1J4785By Tom Hochbaum: Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin just fought last weekend, but it wasn’t enough. Triple G did was Triple G does: Brutally knockout a highly ranked Middleweight. This time, it was Dominic Wade. The previously undefeated Wade was coming off of an unimpressive decision victory over Sam Soliman.

While Soliman does have a very awkward style that can make it difficult to look sharp against, the fact the Soliman was the biggest test on Wade’s resume should have been an indication that Wade probably was not ready for GGG. However, with #1 ranked challenger Tureano Johnson suffering an injury, the IBF chose to promote Wade to Golovkin’s mandatory.

Daniel Jacobs: I want Billy Joe Saunders

1-Jacobs-Hardy-Foreman_MediaWorkout-18By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs) wants to take the scalp of WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) in his next fight.

Jacobs, 29, called Saunders out in social media, and Saunders responded back, saying that he’ll kick Jacobs’ backside. However, it looks like Saunders is just flapping his gums with no real serious interest in fighting the dangerous KO artist Jacobs, because Saunders has a fight scheduled on April 30 against #11 WBO fringe contender Max Bursak (32 4 1, 15 KOs) at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK.

Daniel Jacobs vs. Andy Lee possible for May 21

jacobs66676677By Jeff Aranow: Plans are underway for WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs) to defend his WBA title on May 21 against former WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-3, 24 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Jacobs-Lee will be scheduled on the same night as Deontay Wilder’s defense of his WBC heavyweight title against Alexander Povetkin. It’s unclear whether this could be a double-header for Showtime, but that sounds like a likely plan.

Loeffler wants Golovkin vs. Jacobs fight

Image: Loeffler wants Golovkin vs. Jacobs fightBy Dan Ambrose: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions is interested in matching his fighter IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) up with WBA “regular” middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs) in the near future.

Jacobs, 28, is coming off of a career best win in stopping former WBO 160lb champion Peter Quillin in the 1st round last December in the “Battle of Brooklyn” at the Barclays Center in New York. Earlier this week, Loeffler negotiated a fight between Golovkin and #3 IBF contender Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs).

Quillin wants rematch against Jacobs

Daniel Jacobs vs Peter QuillinBy Dan Ambrose: The recently beaten former WBO middleweight champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (32-1-1, 23 KOs) says he wants a rematch against WBA “regular” middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs), who stopped him in the 1st round in their fight last December. Jacobs hurt Quillin with a right hand in the opening seconds of that fight, and then flurried on him until referee Harvey Dock was forced to step in and stop the contest. Quillin was staggering around the ring at the time of the stoppage. Dock did the right thing by stopping it when he did because if he had allowed it to continue, Jacobs would have surely planted Quillin on the canvas.

Both fighters are managed by the same guy in Al Haymon. If he wants to put them back in together, then he can definitely do that and then put the fight on Showtime or one of the free televisions on Premier Boxing Champions.

Jacobs has the ammo to beat Golovkin, says trainer

Image: Jacobs has the ammo to beat Golovkin, says trainerBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs’ trainer Andre Rozier reportedly believes that Jacobs has the goods to defeat IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) when or if a fight between the two of them ever takes place in the future.

Golovkin is said to be very, very interested in facing Jacobs, but thus far, he’s never had the opportunity to get the 28-year-old American into the ring. Jacobs is coming off of a career best 1st round knockout win over former WBO 160lb champion Peter Quillin in his last fight in December. Jacobs basically jumped on Quillin and took him out with a flurry of heavy shots after hurting him with a right hand.

Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Rating the contenders- Daniel Jacobs

Image: Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Rating the contenders- Daniel JacobsBy Al Classico: Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29KOs), aka ‘The Miracle Man’  has really cemented himself as one of the legitimate middleweight challengers to Golovkin with his emphatic 1 round stoppage of fellow top middleweight Peter Quillin in December 2015. It’s hard to gauge whether that KO was the result of Jacob’s skill level or due to a lapse of concentration and a slow start from Peter Quillin but it was likely a culmination of both.

Perhaps we need to see a rematch between the two to get a more accurate picture on how good both Jacobs and Quillin are in respect to each other. If Jacobs opts not to give Quillin an immediate rematch, but instead decides to take on the biggest challenge of his career and face Golovkin, then how is he likely to fare against the so called ‘Middleweight Monster’?

Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Ranking the contenders – Billy Joe Saunders

Image: Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Ranking the contenders - Billy Joe SaundersBy Al Classico: Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KO’s), The undefeated WBO champion threw a real spanner into the works when he defeated Andy Lee in late 2015 and derailed a potential, higher profile  Lee- Golovkin showdown this year. With the defeat of Lee and the acquisition of a ‘world champion’ belt, his name was immediately thrust into the conversation as a next up Golovkin opponent.

According to some reports, there was an offer tabled to Saunders for a fight against Golovkin in April, however the negotiations collapsed, with money allegedly being the biggest barrier to the deal being struck. Saunders has since opted to go in a different direction at this stage of his career but hopefully this fight can be made at some point in the not-too-distant future as it will be a really intriguing match-up. So if the fight does eventually get made, how would Saunders fare if he were to step up and step into the ring with Golovkin?

Jacobs not overly impressed with Saunders or Lee

jacobsBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA “regular” middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs was a guest analyst for Showtime Boxing tonight in working the Andy Lee (34-3-1, 24 KOs) vs. Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) fight in their contest in the UK. Jacobs came away from the experience disappointed in both fighters, as he thought neither of them distinguished themselves in any way.

Saunders, the winner of the fight by a 12 round majority decision, was more extinguished than distinguished in winning by the scores of 115-111, 114-112 and 113-113. The only judge that seemed to have his head on correctly in my view was Marcus McDonnell, who scored the fight 113-113. You can make an argument that was a fair score because Lee appeared to win 8 of the 12 rounds.

Jacobs wants Lee-Saunders winner

Daniel Jacobs vs Peter QuillinBy Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin isn’t the only interested observer who will be watching this Saturday’s contest between WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) and Billy Joe Saunders (22-0, 12 KOs). WBA World “Regular” middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs) will be watching the fight, and he hopes to face the winner of the fight next.

However, Jacobs is rooting for the 31-year-old Lee to beat Saunders, because he sees that as a potentially bigger fight for him than a fight against Saunders.
