Ahead of Saturday’s unmissable ‘Bad Blood’ grudge fight between Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr, boxing writer Glynn Evans canvassed 25 of boxing’s ace faces to find out who they were backing.

Don Charles (London coach): I go with Billy Joe Saunders on points. Eubank Jr is very good – in fact I can’t detect any weaknesses – but I just feel it’s a fight too soon for him.

Why Saunders-Eubank Jr is just as intriguing as Froch-Groves

eubank7Spencer Brown – The fascinating rivalry between Carl Froch and George Groves illustrated the enduring British appetite for boxing.

There was a special atmosphere at Wembley on the night of May 31, and the explosive denouement – a vicious, jarring right hand from Froch – was a fittingly thrilling conclusion to an enmity that captivated the nation.

As an occasion and event, it was undoubtedly the British boxing highlight of the year.

However, a strong case can be made for a fight on Saturday night that will be equally as intriguing: Billy Joe Saunders vs Chris Eubank Jr.

The Tested Vs The Detested: Billy Joe Saunders Vs Chris Eubank Jr

saunders3By Philip Anthony – Despite boasting a resume of 18 wins in 18 bouts, it would be fair to say that Christopher Livingston Eubank Junior has had things relatively easy in terms of the opposition he has faced since turning pro in 2011. Although in victory he has at times looked sensational, his opponents have mainly been less than stellar, lowly ranked journeymen. It’s true, there have been murmurs of Chris impressing during sparring with the likes of George Groves and James De Gale and there is still a clip up on YouTube of him seemingly ‘holding his own’ against super-middleweight world champ Carl Froch, however, sparring sessions are essentially fight preparation and a very different experience to boxing ‘under the lights’ of a full to capacity arena. Ultimately, Eubank Jr is still unproven and untested as a professional. The fact he had a relatively short amateur career (in the States) adds further fuel to the mystery about just how good he actually is. Who knows how he would cope in the face of true adversity? The mystique about the ability of this brash, Brighton raised pugilist is set to become clearer this coming Saturday night when he takes a huge step up in class and faces what will without doubt be his biggest challenge to date.

The incredible shrinking odds: Saunders v. Eubank Jr.

safe_imageGary J. Cooper: I don’t know exactly what the opening odds were for Billy Joe Saunders vs. Chris Eubank Jr. What I do know, is that on September 23, at 4:15 p.m., I took Saunders(-150). Since the betting site has some rules limiting bet size, I made several bets on Saunders in the next few minutes, including an additional straight bet at (-185), and parlays on Saunders at (-170), (-185), (-215) twice, and (-260). That last bet, at (-260), was placed at 4:27 p.m. The odds may have risen slightly after that, perhaps to (-280) or so, but I don’t remember for sure, and I don’t have a record of it, because I didn’t bet.

Saunders vs Eubank Jr: The Proven vs The Unproven

eubank55555by Owen Hammond: In just short of a week’s time, the highly anticipated fight between Billy Joe Saunders (20-0-0, 11 KOs) and Chris Eubank Jr (18-0-0, 13 KOs) will take place as chief support to the British and European Heavyweight clash between Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury at London’s ExCel arena. Though this fight is not the main event, it is arguably worthy of headlining a card itself and certainly has the potential to outshine the rest of the fights taking place that night.

In what is a very intriguing match-up, and a somewhat rarity in that we are seeing two unbeaten records on the line so early in each fighters career, we will see two of Britain’s most talented Middleweights go head to head for the British, Commonwealth and European championships. In one corner we have Billy Joe Saunders, the holder of all three of the aforementioned belts.

Eubank Jr: Saunders is going to be in serious trouble on November 29th

eubank55555By Scott Gilfoid: #9 WBO Chris Eubank Jr (18-0, 13 KOs) plans on giving #2 WBO Billy Joe Saunders (20-0, 11 KOs) a beating on November 29th to take his British and European middleweight straps when they face each other at the ExCel Arena in London, UK. Eubank Jr, 25, wants to shut Saunders’ trap, because he’s been talking a lot of trash about him, and he wants to expose him and make him eat his words.

Eubank Jr also wants to send Saunders into a permanent retirement, because Saunders has been talking about retiring if he loses the fight. No one knows for sure if Saunders is just blabbering just to get attention or if he’s indeed serious about retiring if he tastes defeat for the first time.

Saunders in tough against Eubank Jr

saunders56235By Daven: Earlier today, a watershed moment transpired, it marked the first direct verbal spar between Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr. It happened at the Talk-sport Studio. In essence Saunders began frantically berating his opponent, without allowing a retort, he aggressively demanded that Chris comply with his lurid stipulation that the loser pay out £100,000.

Why does a professional fighter feel the need to make such a crude request? Billy is being handsomely paid to fight and he should focus on that alone. However, rather than rising to the bait, Chris sensibly laughed off the ignorant remarks and referred to Billy as a “kid” who is out of his depth.
