HopkinsKovalevPhilly_Hoganphotos2By Wilmar Patino: On Saturday night despite a late start on the eastcoast (midnight) the light heavyweight unification bout between Bernard Hopkins and Sergey Kovalev drew in the 2nd highest numbers of views this year for HBO. A highly anticipated match of an established star in Hopkins and a fast rising star in Kovalev.

According to Nielsen Media Research the bout averaged a viewership of 1.328 million! With a peak of 1.397 million views. This makes it the 2nd most viewed fight in the United States for 2014. Only behind the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs Brian Vera rematch. Which average 1.390 views on HBO for the fight on March 1.

Sergey Kovalev: The new era of the light heavyweight division

1-HopkinsKovalevFinalPC_HoganphotosBy Wilmar Patino (Boxings Finest): First off I want to Congratulate Sergey Kovalev for a brilliant fight vs the ageless wonder Bernard Hopkins. As someone who has been following Sergey Kovalev since his days on NBC Sports back when he dismantled and KO’d Gabriel Campillo ( A former light heavyweight champion). I would like to give him credit for taking this fight and proving to the naysayers that he is more than just a puncher. I would also like to thank Hopkins for taking this fight and for giving us an exciting 12th round by giving his best in the closing round of a much anticipated fight.

With that being said I have read a lot of articles on here and seen a lot of love and respect being given to Hopkins for his career milestones and bravery coming into the fight. As well as some much deserved respect for his attempt at unifying the titles last night. Yet this article will be about a favorite fighter of mine Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev.

Darnell Boone vs The 3 Champions (Ward, Stevenson, Kovalev)

stevenson221By Wilmar Patino: Darnell Boone is not a fighter anyone talks about. With good reason because he’s viewed as nothing but a tough journeyman. So I’ll grab your attention with this. Andre Ward, Adonis Stevenson, and Sergey Kovalev. If you do not know by now Darnell Boone gave these 3 champions a stiff test and did something to each and everyone of them that hasn’t been repeated since. What may that be? Well let’s have a quick look in this short article I’ve written about Darnell Boone

Darnell Boone vs Andre Ward – Andre Ward won this fight unanimously, but that’s not without having some adversity along the way. Darnell Boone hit Andre Ward with a crisp shot that had him hit the canvas. Yes that’s right this “journeyman” connected through the great defensive skills of Andre Ward. Something I haven’t seen happen since.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao from 2 different points of view

floyd6002By Wilmar Patino (Boxing’s Finest): So this is an article that analyzes Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao from the perspective of 2 different boxing fans. This in no way is a prediction, but more of an analysis and theory of what could happen. Not focusing on the hypothetical too much , but rather focus on the strengths and perceived weaknesses of the two.

I will also begin this article on a rather different note than I ever have. I had a conversation a week or two ago with a boxing fan on this site. Arguing why Mayweather would win is rather easy, but arguing why Pacquiao would win is a little more difficult.

It Happened!

hopkins6By Wilmar Patino (Boxing’s Finest): From upsets to comebacks we will explore some of the greatest moments in Boxing that had us in disbelief. Some of the greatest moments in any sport occur when the unexpected happens, and boxing is no different. What makes boxing so amazing and different from other sports is that it is the only sport in which a participant can lose 99% of the match and in the blink of an eye end up in the winner’s bracket.

Chris Algieri vs. Manny Pacquiao prediction

algieri5By Wilmar Patino: This November Chris Algieri and Manny Pacquiao square off in a PPV showdown on HBO from Macao, China.  They have contrasting styles. So much to take in account when making an in depth decision on what would happen when the 5’11 Algieri faces the small 5’6 Pacquiao. One thing I can assure you is that this will not be a Margarito/De La Hoya esque fight.  No, There are a lot of variables in which one should review in a scrupulous manner to make a prediction.

What we know about Chris Algieri: What we know is that Algieri has good boxing skills (not great). He’s a bit of a jabbing machine, uses lateral movement all night and tries to circle his way out of trouble. He can make some adjustments as the fight goes on and after his battle with Ruslan Provodnikov we know he’s disciplined, and capable of keeping his cool and stick with the game plan. We also know by now that he has heart.

Falling in love with Power

golovkin0013By Wilmar Patino: After Gennady Golovkin’s showcase of power and skill many here are quick to praise the middle weight champion, justifiably so. He is the real deal and a true prize fighter. Gennady Golovkin has great amateur credentials and seemingly is rising through the pound for pound rankings grabbing everyone’s attention along the way.

I acknowledge his talent and am becoming a real fan of his knockout power. He cuts the ring off very good and unloads bombs on his opponents when he gets the chance or creates the opportunity. Yet I myself have to be reminded of a mistake all of us make, have made, and will continue to make. The mistake I’m talking about ladies and gentlemen is…falling in love with power.

Lucas Matthysse’s next opponent to be Mike Perez or Roberto Ortiz

matthysse233By Wil Patino: I usually write articles with some creativity and originality. This is the first time I’m trying to report “news” on a boxing news site. Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse has always been an exciting fighter who packs a punch and has some boxing skill.

I was hoping to see him back in the mix with some bigger names but these are the names that he will most likely face On September 6 2014. Its between Michael “The Artist” Perez (20-1) and Roberto Ortiz (31-0-1) 24 KO’s.

Losers are now winners, winners are losers and the atrocity of todays boxing!

rios59By Wil Patino: It seems that in today’s world of boxing losing a fight gets you more opportunities than winning it. Of coarse thats not always the case but I am sensing a shift in the way fans have accepted losers being given undeserving shots at titles and bigger money than the actual winners of the fights. At first I just thought some were in the right situation at the right time, but when I scrutinize it all its a concerning pattern worth mentioning.

For example, lets go back a little and take a look at the pattern of this new era that continuously grows.  If you remember not long ago Brandon Rios lost to Mike Alvarado, yet Brandon Rios gets a shot at Manny Pacquiao. OK, maybe Pacquiao needed an easier tune up than Alvarado to bounce back from his knock out loss.

Did You Know? Active fighters Edition
