To fight Pacquiao something has to go for Mayweather

floyd5by Yannis Mihanos: Cinco de Mayo, this great Mexican bank holiday has become a synonymous with each year’s appearances of boxing’s number 1 pound for pound Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0).

Floyd has lately marked this date on his calendar for his performances. This year though things have changed and become a bit more perplexed. Mexico’s Saul Canelo Alvarez threatens to change these plans for good.

Will a defeat from Pacquiao ruin Mayweather’s boxing legacy?

floyd02by Yannis Mihanos: A lot has been said about Floyd Mayweather Jr’s reluctance to take the big fight against arch rival Manny Pacquiao. Last news is that Mayweather appears eager for the fight to happen .If that is true that might be his big chance to seal his boxing legacy. Or maybe not? What if this  happens and  has a bad outcome for the number 1 pound for pound king of boxing today?

How much will affect him and the boxing world?   Will he ever be the same afterwards? What a defeat will mean on Mayweather’s legacy? What I think is possible to happen is the following:
The first reaction is Floyd’s verification that he was right to avoid Manny for all these years. What may happen is the following episodes in no particular order:

If Not Mayweather, Maybe Marquez?

Yannis Mihanos: Last Saturday night we saw a very skilful display of boxing by Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao came to this fight with a lot to prove, some of his critics had previously refered to him as a tired veteran, but all these rumours got silenced during the fight.

Pacman was in sparkling form, crisp, sharp in his movements and athletic as always… aggressive enough to knock Algieri out many times. I do believe that the old Pacquiao would have stopped Algieri right after the 9th round but it is the new more humble side of Pacquiao that didn’t let him to finish what he started and let Algieri instead regroup and continue until the end of the fight.

Will Wladimir Klitschko will stay unbeaten until the end?

klitschko123by Yannis Mihanos: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (63-3, 53 KOs) easily dispatched previously unbeaten opponent Kubrat Pulev (20-1, 11 KOs) on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

In todays heavyweight division there is only one man who can make a difference and that is Wladimir Klitschko. His body physique along with his raw natural power has made it  impossible for others to compete at the same level with him.

Hopkins-Kovalev aftermath: A good plan gone wrong

1-IMG_9401[1]By Yannis Mihanos: Last Saturday night Sergey Kovalev krushed the hopes of Bernard Hopkins of becoming a unified world champion  at the remarkable age of 49.

Prior to that fight, expectation of Hopkins winning the fight had grown substantially big. Could the old horse pull it off again ? Kovalev was also coming with a big hype as he had crushed all his earlier 23 opponents… even if for some were considered tomato cans. As for tomato cans, even Hopkins said in an interview it takes a certain skill to open the tomato can without cutting your hand…

Bernard Hopkins: Will the curtain of his career fall on Nov 8th?

hopkins2222By Yannis Mihanos: What keeps 49-year-old Bernard Hopkins going? One thing is certain the IBF and WBA light heavyweight world champion Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins has already booked a place in boxing history.

A place that not many and certainly not at this age will enter. Against heavy bomber Sergey “The Crusher” Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs) will have a very tough challenge in their fight HBO Championship Boxing on November 8th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Floyd Mayweather Jr needs to fight Pacquiao

floyd002By Yannis Mihanos: So far Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) during his career has remained unmatched and of course very, very rich.

For many boxers this would have been an amazing feat if of course no cherry picking was ever involved. Because someone cherry picks not only with whom he selects but also with whom he avoids and this is what hurts Floyd’s otherwise infallible career.

Floyd Mayweather Jr: The story so far

floyd72By Yannis Mihanos: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr has fought well against all the aggressors that has been up to during his boxing career: Jose Luis Castillo, Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Robert Guerrero, Marcos Maidana, Ricky Hatton and the list goes on (47 in total).

Styles make the fights as very well they say and Mayweather has followed this rule to the letter and so far he has very much succeeded.
