Can Algieri cope at the elite level and beat Pacquiao?

by Yannis Mihanos: I will keep this article small and brief and I will express my opinion fairly and directly. So here is how it goes:

Chris Algieri was relatively unknown until a surprise 12 round decision win over Ruslan “The Siberian Rocky” Provodnikov last June. Algieri’s multi-educational background along with his 20-0 boxing record has made him an interesting prospect and now he appears to pose a threat for the Filipino 8 times world champ Manny Pacquiao.

Algieri is intelligent, athletic and obviously at the peak of his career. There is no doubt about that.

Being successful in many parts of life is remarkable and very useful but here in boxing, things are counted a bit different.

Algieri on Saturday night will step on a different territory. A much more dangerous one and a more challenging one than ever before. He will be at a completely different level. The whole boxing world will be watching him fighting against an elite fighter in the name of Pacquiao.

Tim Bradley came to fight Pacquiao as the younger and hungrier fighter in his prime. He was a prospect too, but in both fights the one that the judges saw him win and the other that they saw him lose, he proved nothing but the obvious: that he is a tough warrior but not an elite fighter.

It comes always a point in the career of a fighter where the difference in quality has to be seen and experienced in the ring, in the real line of fire. There all the expectations begin and end.

In my eyes I see no other result than clear victory of Pacquiao. If not, I will be deeply disappointed and surprised. I am still not convinced that the talented Algieri can outclass Pac.

Here we speak about an elite level and unless Algieri is already an elite, I see no way that this will happen. On Nov. 22, at the Cotai Arena at the Venetian Macao in Macau, China we will all receive the final answer…
