Heavyweight Dark Horse – Luis Ortiz

1-OrtizVidondo_Hoganphotos1By G Bell: While I think that WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is an adequate heavyweight, there is a dark horse hovering around the heavyweight division that more than a few fighters and managers seem to be quietly steering their fighters around.

I believe he is the next heavyweight with the skill and power to beat Wilder, Tyson Fury, and Wladimir Klitschko. His name is Luis Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs). He is a two-time and current WBA interim heavyweight champion and his nickname is appropriately “The Real King Kong.”

Golovkin: The Oblitermatron

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy G Bell: Once again IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) proved he is the premiere boxer at 160 last Saturday in beating Lemieux by an 8th round TKO at Madison Square Garden. Much respect must go out to IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) who did not have to take this fight, and like the other so called champions at 160, could have taken easier fights and milked the title for all the cash he could handle. Lemieux actually caused Gennady Golovkin, to box, which he does, much to my surprise, extremely well.

If you saw the fight, one has to wonder, just what was Lemieux’s game plan going in? From interviews with Lemieux, I fully expected, he would be charging in, head down, swinging for the fences, damn the torpedoes.

Boxing’s Demise

By G Bell: There used to be a time when boxers had a lot more heart, pride and honor. Compared to today’s crop of fighters, I would say the general boxing public is getting a mucho watered down version of what the sweet science is really all about. Gone are the days when like gladiators of yore, fighters proudly stepped into the arena, proudly willing to do battle until there was only one standing.

Golovkin-Stevens: And new Middleweight champ is…

golovkin122By G Bell: A potential fight of the year bout seems to have slipped under the radar. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. Curtis Stevens has the ability to be another Brandon Rios, Mike Alvarado 1, tilt. Both possess extraordinary power, and Stevens for one, has made it quite clear of his intentions on the night. His plan is to usurp the young lion Golovkin, claiming he plans on killing GGG when they meet.

Golovkin on the other hand, maybe due to his lack of English, but probably more to his demeanor, has avoided the trash talk. He’s only too happy to get back in the ring with anybody, since most of the middle weights have unashamedly been avoiding him.

Mayweather-Canelo shocker

MayweatherWorkout__StephanieTrapp_KR6A3789(Photo credit: Stephanie Trapp/Showtime) By G Bell: I’d be hard pressed to find some boxing fan who is not excited about the the Floyd Mayweather vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight this September on the 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a bout more enticing and mouthwatering than this bout. Most believe that Mayweather will be victorious, and I for one am a believer. I’m not saying it’s “easy money” for Floyd, but with his god given talents, he should prevail. I don’t want to seem like a negative nancy but I foresee two problems, over which neither boxer will have any control.

Those problems being: The referee and the judges. Unless we get a real pro like an Eddie Cotton, this could be a long night for Mayweather Jr. If Canelo Alvarez  is allowed to hold, hit on breaks, rabbit punch, low blows, well, we may very well see a huge upset. The ref has got to make sure he upholds the law in the squared circle, and not allow any shenanigans that will
ruin this event for one and all.
