Miguel Cotto ordered to defend WBC title against Golovkin vs. Rubio winner

cotto56678By Cameron Gillon: The WBC have officially ordered that their middleweight champion Miguel Cotto defend his newly won title against the winner of October’s middleweight clash between IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Marco Antonio Rubio.

This is a good call from the WBC as Cotto is not seen as a real middleweight. He won the title off of a injury prone and past his prime Sergio Martinez. Rubio currently holds the WBC interim title which means this title will be on the line in his fight against Golovkin also so if Golovkin wins he will become Cotto’s mandatory challenger for the WBC belt and this will not amuse Miguel Cotto at all.

Timothy Bradley still believes a third fight with Manny Pacquaio can happen in 2015

bradley3By Cameron Gillon: Timothy Bradley is hoping that once he is back in the ring and wins a few fights that he can get a third fight to settle the score with Manny Pacquiao, the WBO welterweight champion. Back in June 2012 Bradley defeated Pacquiao in a highly controversial split decision to win the WBO welterweight title and ended Pacquiao’s seven year unbeaten winning record.

Bradley then had a rematch with Pacquiao in April this year and this time lost in a clear 12 round unanimous decision which gave Bradley his first loss on his record.

In the rematch, Bradley injured his calf and is currently out on the sidelines and hasn’t got a fight lined up this year but is hoping to return in November, December. Bradley also said he doesn’t want his team and promoter Bob Arum to put him in a warm up or a tune up fight and wants to get straight back in with fighting the best. ‘I don’t want no tune up fight, man. I’m not about that.

groves445By Cameron Gillon: George Groves and James Degale long time rivals even from the amateur days, they both shared and fought in the same boxing club and have never liked each other bit. Degale had claimed for years that Groves has lived in his shadow, that Groves was jealous of his achievements and the things he has done by winning a gold medal at the Olympics and becoming a British Olympic champion.

In 2011 a fight was made between the two with Frank Warren at the time promoting the fight. The Build up was watched closely by many fans and it was the fight that put both fighters in the public eye a bit more.

Mikkel Kessler vs Andre Ward 2 in the works for rematch in Denmark

ward3432By Cameron Gillon: Reports recently surfaced that Mikkel Kessler vs. Andre Ward 2 is a done deal. Both fighters have said to have agreed to fighting each other and Ward has agreed to have the fight take place in Denmark.

This is a good fight but one you feel is a bit pointless for Ward as he has already beaten Kessler in the super six in 2009 that Ward went on to win, Ward won by a technical decision after Kessler had a couple of cuts over eyes as a result of a lot of headbutts from Ward. Kessler said he feels he would of won the fight if the cuts didn’t occur in the fight but to be honest Ward was ahead clearly.

Anthony Joshua: Can he become a heavyweight world champion by 2015?

joshua67By Cameron Gillon: Anthony Joshua is a young unbeaten British heavyweight boxer who is promoted by Eddie Hearn and his promotion base Matchroom Sport, he turned pro in July 2013 and so has had 7 fights and in which he won all of them by way of knockout and inside 2 rounds. He won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic games in London, England and since then many have had the opinion of him taking over the new era in the heavyweight division once Wladimir Klitchsko retires.

It is unlikely that Joshua will have enough fights and experience to ever get a fight against either of the Klitchsko brothers as Vitali has pretty much retired and Wlad hasn’t got many left you would feel unless he keeps winning and wants to make more money and unify all belts by going after the WBC title.

Carl Froch to consider retirement if fight with Chavez Jr in Vegas falls through

froch#5By Cameron Gillon: IBF and WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch has said he will consider calling it a day on his boxing career if a long awaited fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Las Vegas falls through. Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom recently stated that talks with Chavez promoter Bob Arum at Top Rank had recently re-opened to see if they can put together a fight for January 25th 2015.

Hearn said if the fight was to be made that it wouldn’t be this year it would most definitely be in early next year. Carl Froch isn’t thinking to much about it, as he knows putting his last fight on hold for Chavez is risky due to how unreliable he has been before in pulling out of a fight with Gennady Golovkin earlier this year.

Maidana with a lot to gain if beats Mayweather

maidana6444By Cameron Gillon: WBA, WBC, Ring weltweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) has been granted permission to defend his WBC 154 junior middleweight title along with his welterweight belts against Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) in their rematch on September 13th at the MGM Grand.

This is down to the fact Mayweather hasn’t defended the title since winning it against Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez last September. That’s nearly a year of not defending the belt and you can bet there is a few hungry fighters after the belt, and Floyd knows he has to defend it in some manor or risk being stripped of the title.
