Maidana with a lot to gain if beats Mayweather

maidana6444By Cameron Gillon: WBA, WBC, Ring weltweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) has been granted permission to defend his WBC 154 junior middleweight title along with his welterweight belts against Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) in their rematch on September 13th at the MGM Grand.

This is down to the fact Mayweather hasn’t defended the title since winning it against Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez last September. That’s nearly a year of not defending the belt and you can bet there is a few hungry fighters after the belt, and Floyd knows he has to defend it in some manor or risk being stripped of the title.

Canelo Alvarez is ranked number 1 to get a shot at Mayweather for the title but I’m sure a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr is not on top of Alvarez’s list at this moment after the clowning he took from Mayweather Jr last September.

This is to me isn’t that great. Mayweather has shown he has no plans to defend the titles at 154 in any of his last three fights. The only time we could see him moving up to defend them would be against Canelo Alvarez or Miguel Cotto in rematches which doesn’t seem likely due to Canelo and Cotto likely fighting in May 2015. This leaves Mayweather having to defend his belt against Maidana.

In my opinion Mayweather should vacate the belts if hes not going to defend them against the best fighters at the actual 154 weight. Fighters like Erislandy Lara, Demetrius Andrade and Canelo will all at some point want to get their hands on these belts. If Mayweather is allowed to go a year without defending them it becomes a problem, as you can bet Mayweather will not be taking on Andrade or Lara ever. It’s about the money for Floyd now and unless he’s forced into defending against a mandatory then he won’t be fighting anyone waiting.

Is this right? I’m sure there will be mixed opinions.
