Mayweather v Alvarez: Not a good match-up

floyd92By Puncher’s chance: The upcoming showdown on 14 September at the MGM Grand Las Vegas between Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s), in my mind, is not the match-up the fans wanted.

Canelo is a good fighter but when you look at his previous opponents, they have not been of the highest quality and he has made heavy weather with some. A good win against Austin Trout aside, Canelo has fought guys like an old and shot Shane Mosley, Kermit Cintron who had lost two of his last three before the Alvarez fight, Josesito Lopez is nowhere near world class and two mediocre British fighters in Matthew Hatton and Ryan Rhodes.

Mayweather Jr. isn’t as good as people think

mayweather5434By Puncher’s chance: Floyd Mayweather Jr. was once a once great fighter, but he will never be as good as the likes of both Sugar Ray Leanard and Sugar Ray Robinson or even a prime Oscar De La Hoya.

Up until the end of this year, Mayweather has had only had 1 fight a year in the last six years and he still commands the most money. My point is that it’s the U.S fans who are being short changed.

The Manny Paquiao fight could have and should have happened four years ago but in my mind. I believe Floyd didn’t want that fight because he was trying to protect his legacy and quite rightly so but he was short changing the public, and yet he still commands the highest pay cheque.

Is Mayweather, Broner, Ward and Deontay as good as people think?

mayweather464By A punchers chance: Floyd Mayweather, Adrien Broner, Andre Ward, Deontay Wilder. America once had a proud history in boxing. Not any more in my opinion.

All the above named fighters are good and at some point great. For instance, Floyd “Money” Mayweather. What boxer who’s heart is all for boxing calls himself money? Sugar Ray Leonard. Don “The Cobra” Curry and “The Hit Man” Tommy Hearns. Fighters who wanted to be the best, not just earn the most.
