Mayweather Jr. isn’t as good as people think

mayweather5434By Puncher’s chance: Floyd Mayweather Jr. was once a once great fighter, but he will never be as good as the likes of both Sugar Ray Leanard and Sugar Ray Robinson or even a prime Oscar De La Hoya.

Up until the end of this year, Mayweather has had only had 1 fight a year in the last six years and he still commands the most money. My point is that it’s the U.S fans who are being short changed.

The Manny Paquiao fight could have and should have happened four years ago but in my mind. I believe Floyd didn’t want that fight because he was trying to protect his legacy and quite rightly so but he was short changing the public, and yet he still commands the highest pay cheque.

It’s the US public who still idolize him, but can’t see they aren’t getting the best deal. I believe that some American boxing fans are blinded to the fact that they only have 2 or 3 world class operators now compared to fighters of 20 or 30 years ago.

America is not a superpower of boxing anymore. And as for a proper heavyweight contender, you can forget about it and that, and that’s the reason you cannot have a conversation about the noble art without “Money” Mayweather’s name being banded about.

Mayweather beat shot Shane Mosely, a shot Miquel Cotto , a guy in Victor Ortiz who quit against a domestic level opponent in Josesito Lopez, and with these fights he still commanded the his level of income over any fighter on the planet. Can any reasonable boxing fan say they have had value for money off their hero.

Maybe I am missing something, but I’m looking for in a fighter is a guy like Carl Froch. Not the best fighter on the planet but doesn’t shy away from any challenge. His last dozen or so fights have been against fighters where the contest was a toss up. An evenly contested affair, but can you say any of Mayweather’ previous encounters going back to an over-the-hill Oscar De La Hoya really stood any sort of chance.

Mayweather is not as good as people think he is.
