Frank Martin: “The Fight is Already Won Mentally” Against Tank Davis

Contender Frank Martin believes he’s already got WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis beaten ahead of their fight on June 15th in Las Vegas.

Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) and Tank Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) met today for their initial press conference to begin promoting their fight next month on Amazon Prime Video PPV at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The two fighters sparred together in the past, and Gervonta reportedly got the better of Martin. However, Martin chalks it up to being just sparring, saying that sometimes fighters have bad days. It’s unclear how bad of a day Martin had against Tank, but it doesn’t sound like it went well for him.

Martin’s Mindset

“Mentally, I feel like the fight is won already because I’m doing everything I need to do,” said Frank Martin to Fight Hub TV about his belief that he’s already beaten Gervonta Davis in his mind.

“I’m breaking him down, studying him. The game plan is crazy. A lot of the guys he gets in there with is not like me. They’re not like me,” Martin continued. “The game plan that we got, we’re going to going there and capitalize on the game plan, I think it’ll be a crazy night.”

Martin is going to have to box Tank Davis because he’s not going to win a slugging match, as he hits too hard and will take advantage of his leaky defense.

“I think y’all are going to see a pull away. In his [Gervonta] last five fights, it’s either real close or he’s getting beat by guys, and then boom, he lands that big shot. A lot of them guys, they’re not me,” said Martin.

Exciting Undercard

The PBC card is an interesting one, with David Benavidez moving up from super middleweight to fight former WBC light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk in the chief support bout for the interim World Boxing Council 175-lb title.

It was interesting to see Benavidez being the smaller guy during his face-off with Gvozdyk today. Benavidez looked thinner than the muscular former WBC champion Gvozdyk.

What Benavidez has in his favor is the 37-year-old Gvozdyk retired for four years after his tenth-round knockout loss to Artur Beterbiev in 2019, and he’s only fought three times since staging a comeback in 2023, beating several low-level opponents.
