Usyk’s Secret Weapon: Advice from Wladimir Klitschko to Beat Fury

Oleksandr Usyk revealed that former unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko advised him how to defeat Tyson Fury in their undisputed championship fight on May 18th.

IBF/WBA/WBO champion Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) isn’t saying what Wladimir told him, but the way he smiled suggests it was good advice. The look in Usyk’s eyes when discussing Wladimir’s advice told all.

He has a plan for defeating the Gypsy King Fury, who is helpless against movers and potshot fighters due to his advanced age and his massive gargantuan size. Big guys like him are only effective when younger and against limited opposition.

Although Wladimir lost to Fury in their fight in 2015, he came close to beating him at age 40 despite throwing few punches. Not surprisingly, the faster, more powerful Wladimir landed the cleaner, harder punches throughout the contest but didn’t throw enough shots to win.

Fury mostly scratched at the air all night with his punches, trying to ward Wladimir off to make him think twice about unloading his powerful left hook and right hands.

Most fans would agree that Wladimir would have knocked out Fury if his former trainer, Emanuel Steward, were in his corner that night. Steward passed away in 2012, leaving Wladimir rudderless with old sparring partner Johnathon Banks as his coach for the Fury fight.

Klitschko’s Winning Wisdom

“Wladimir has given me advice, but now it’s secret,” said Oleksandr Usyk to Secondsout about him having spoken to former unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and given advice from him on how to defeat Tyson Fury on May 18th.

It’s pretty obvious what Usyk must do to whip Fury on May 18th, and that’s if he actually shows up without suffering another injury or whatnot.

Obvious attack strategies for Usyk:

1. Target Fury’s eye
2. Use movement
3. Don’t allow Fury to clinch
4. Land shots to his breadbasket

“Not if, when,” said Usyk when asked about him making a homecoming to Ukraine if he beats Fury twice. “I want to do a fight in Ukraine at the big stadium, Olimsky. My goal is to make a fight in a stadium. I think I do it.

“If I can do a KO, I do. If I can do 12 rounds. My goal is to win. Eddie Hearn is a lot of speak,” said Usyk, reacting to being told that Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn saying that His Excellency Turki Alalshikh wants Anthony Joshua to fight the winner of the May 18th fight between Usyk and Fury.

Joshua’s Apology Accepted

“Yes, definitely,” said Usyk when told that Joshua apologized for going into a meltdown inside the ring after his loss to him in their second fight. “I don’t have bad feelings about Joshua because I respect this man. He’s a great man. He’s a great boxer, an Olympic champion, and two times world champion.

“I think it’s emotion. I respect this man. No, I good,” said Usyk when asked if he wanted an apology from Joshua.

AJ was the epitome of a poor loser that night after Usyk schooled him for the second time, showing zero class in throwing his two world title belts out of the ring after the fight. Joshua then grabbed the mic and started talking pure nonsense, babbling about this and that, making no sense and shocking the families.
