Shakur Stevenson Calls Out ‘Tank’ on Avoidance: “It’s Time to Fight”

Shakur Stevenson posted on social media today, urging Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis to “stop ducking” him and take the fight.

The unbeaten WBC lightweight champion Shakur (21-0, 10 KOs) told Tank that his beef isn’t with his ex-promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr, and he wants him to focus on a fight against him.

WBA ‘regular’ Tank (29-0, 27 KOs) has been trading trash talk with Shakur for weeks, but it’s unclear if his true motivation is to help drive interest in his June 15th title defense against Frank Martin because fans aren’t amped up about that mismatch.

Shakur’s promoters at Top Rank still haven’t announced his next opponent for his July 6th title defense on ESPN at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

If Shakur wants to improve his chances of getting a fight against Tank Davis, he’ll have to forget about his ‘Hit and not get hit’ motto and go to war.

The Mayweather Smoke Screen

“Your beef is not with Floyd Mayweather. There’s a fighter out here who wants to fight you. Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, let’s make the fight happen. I’ve been Tweeting, and I’m tired of talking about it. Stop ducking me, and let’s make the fight happen. Come on,” said Shakur Stevenson on social media, calling out WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta Davis for a unification.

Fans are tired of waiting for the Tank vs. Shakur fight. Obviously, the hold-up is on Tank Davis’ side because he’s not shown any interest in fighting the defensive artist or anyone who posed a real threat to him.

Is Stevenson Wasting His Time?

You would think by now that Stevenson would have realized what the Baltimore native Tank Davis is about, and given up on fighting him. But he doesn’t seem to be willing to give up, and that’s also a reflection of the lack of popular PPV-level fighters in the lightweight division.

One Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia moved up to 140, it left the division barren of popular PPV-worthy options for Shakur, besides Tank, who is more a carefully maneuvered guy who has shown no ambition to change the way his management has matched him during his 11-year career.

Tank’s career is more about getting fans excited about his fights against low-hanging fruit by clout-chasing other fighters that he has no intention of ever fighting. In this example, Shakur is being used by Tank as a tool to get fans interested in his June 15th fight against Frank Martin.
