Pre-Fight Drama: Garcia and Haney Turn Up The Heat

Ryan Garcia showed that he’s playing for keeps by giving his psychological breakdown of Devin Haney, suggesting that he’s still being babied at 25 by his father Bill Haney, who controls him in the promotion of their April 20th fight.

Bill’s infantilizing of Devin is disturbing to Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs), who feels Dev can’t think for himself and is paralyzed during press conferences. Emotionally stunted and completely reliant on his dad, Devin doesn’t know what to say without Bill doing the talking for him. He’s been under Bill’s thumb for so long that he doesn’t know how to act on his own.

WBC light welterweight champion Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) and Ryan are going to need to work harder to drive interest in their fight on April 20th on DAZN PPV because the tickets aren’t selling, and fans are appalled at the $80 price for the event.

They feel that the undercard is poor, one of the worst for a high-price PPV event in memory. The two fighters will have to go into theatrical mode with the trash talk and interviews if this event is going to sell.

Ryan Goes For the Throat

“He’s a kid, and he’s been babied by his dad,” Ryan Garcia told DAZN about Devin Haney. That’s all he is. They think I’m playing around. I’m not. He’s going to find out in the ring. He thinks this is a boxing match. This is not a boxing match to me. This is a fight I can’t lose.”

Ryan is questioning Devin’s maturity, suggesting that he’s a mental equivalent of an infant, who is being led around by his dad, Bill, and having his growth as an adult stunted. In other words, Devin can’t operate independently without being told what to do.

“Ryan is showing that he’s a kid. Look at his antics. Look at what he’s doing,” said Haney. “He’s all over the place with it.

Haney Keeps His Cool (Mostly)

“The world is going to see how great I am and how much better I am and how, since the amateurs, things change. It’s who became the better pro, and that’s what all this is about.

“Ryan Garcia is just another opponent to me. I’m in competition with greatness. This is bigger than Ryan Garcia. He’s in my way,” said Haney.

“I’m preparing for Ryan Garcia the boxer, not the Ryan Garcia the activist, the TikTok influencer,” said Bill Haney to DAZN Boxing. This guy and his antics. On April 20th, it’s going to be the death of Ryan Garcia in the way that you know it.”
