Ryan Garcia is targeting Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz and Sebastian Fundora as possible options for his next fight following his upset victory over Devin Haney last weekend.
A fight against WBA light welterweight champion Pitbull Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KOs) would be the easier and more logical fight to put together for Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs).
The 6’5 1/2″ WBO junior middleweight champion Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) is out with out of action due to a nose injury. When he does return to the ring, it’ll likely be against Errol Spence or a rematch with Tim Tszyu.
Taking a Break
Ryan Garcia will reportedly take a rest for a while, and it’s unclear if he’ll fight again until 2025. On social media, Ryan stated that he made around $50 million in total from his fight against Haney, including the $12 million he says he got from the $2 million bet that he made on himself.
When you look at the huge windfall that Ryan made from the Haney fight and add that to the $30 million fortune he came into the fight with, his net worth is now close to $100 million.
That’s an enormous amount of dough for a fighter who is only 25 years old and considered the new ‘Face of Boxing.’ I don’t think that even Floyd Mayweather Jr. had $100 million when he was the same age as Ryan, but it shows how the sport has changed since Floyd’s era way back in the Jurassic era.
Potential Matchups
Pitbull Cruz would be a big fight for Ryan Garcia if the two could agree on a weight. The 5’4″ Cruz is essentially a pumped-up lightweight, who is tiny for the 140-lb division and would be giving away a lot of size against Ryan.
In Cruz’s last fight in March, he stopped WBA light welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero in the eighth round in a one-sided mismatch. That was an impressive performance by Cruz, but he was facing what many boxing fans saw as a textbook example of a paper champion. Rolly was so awful and clearly didn’t belong as a champion.
The lanky ‘Towering Inferno’ Fundora would be a difficult fight for Ryan due to his height, reach, and high work rate. Ryan might have a hard time dealing with the 80 to 100 punches Fundora throws each round, as he wouldn’t be able to take rest breaks like he was during his match against Haney.
