New Matchroom signee Jaron ‘Boots; Ennis doubts whether the company will have much luck trying to set up a fight between him and Terence Crawford.
Some fans believe that the 36-year-old Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) is holding out for an eight-figure payday of $10-15 million to be given him for his next fight, and that ain’t happening. That was a one-time thing, and it was because of Spence.
Crawford has been on an extended victory lap, still reliving the glory of his win over the ring-rusty, weight-drained Errol Spence last July, making a big deal out of it rather than returning to work. It’s mind-boggling how Crawford is milking that one win.
Can you imagine if everyone took a year off after having one good day at the job? Where would we all be? I can’t understand because that kind of behavior is alien to me.
Ennis: The Only Viable Option
Whether Crawford wants to admit it to himself or not, Boots Ennis is his only chance for a good payday. He can forget about getting the kind of dough that he got for his last fight against Errol Spence Jr. last July because that’s not happening.
Terence will not get that kind of dough for a right with Boots Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs), which is a far riskier fight than the ones he’s been targeting against Sebastian Fundora and Tim Tszyu.
Crawford would like Canelo Alvarez to bless him with a golden parachute retirement payday, but that’s not happening. As soon Crawford puts that crazy notion out of his head, he can snap back to reality and take the fight with Boots.
Clock’s Ticking, Terence
If Crawford stays out of the ring long enough, fans will forget about him, and he won’t be able to make big money. He’ll just be seen as another Keith Thurman type who fights on rare occasions and is only remembered by older fans.
“I’m not sure. He said a few times he’s not looking my way; I’m not a big enough name. But there’s nobody else left for him to fight. Either you fight me, or you fight nobody,” said Jaron Ennis to Matchroom Boxing about a fight between him and Crawford.
