Hearn Puzzled by Canelo – Munguia Rumors

Promoter Eddie Hearn appeared confused and skeptical about the reports of Canelo Alvarez fighting Jaime Munguia on May 4th on Amazon Prime PPV, back with PBC. Hearn isn’t sure what to make of the news from ESPN Knockout about Canelo vs. Munguia agreed and back with Amazon Prime.

Hearn Unsure, Fans Wait

Before yesterday, the Canelo-Minguia fight was expected to take place on DAZN, but now it looks like it’s going to be shown on Amazon Prime. Salvador Rodriguez and Barbozabox of ESPN Knockout both reported that Canelo-Munguia is agreed and could be shown on Amazon Prime PPV.

“So not only is Canelo vs. Munguia agreed for the biggest fight between Mexicans in many years. PBC also returned to the table with Prime Video,” said Salvador Rodriguez on X. “This duel will make noise 🇲🇽🤝🏼🇲🇽 on Cinco de Mayo weekend.”

“Hearing it is almost a done deal. Preliminary Congratulations to PBC, Canelo & Munguia. Great job coming together, that’s what’s all about. I do believe it is a highly commercial fight. Mexico Vs. Mexico = WAR,” said BarbosaBox on X.

The question marks are that Munguia is affiliated with DAZN, and Canelo had supposedly left PBC after a contract dispute. If Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) does fight Canelo on May 4th, it would likely have to be a dual network fight, which wouldn’t be good for PBC and Amazon Prime PPV, as the buys would be split between the two networks.

Unfortunately, Canelo vs. Munguia ia NOT a big enough fight for it to do well on two networks. Munguia isn’t a big star in the U.S, and the boxing public hasn’t been demanding this fight. They’ve wanted Canelo to fight David Benavidez.

Munguia is just a regular contender, a slight step above Edgar Berlanga talent-wise, with an a medicore record just like his, which has kept him from begoming a big name in the United States.

“I don’t think it’s official yet; we’ll have to see. Obviously, he’s with PBC, isn’t he? I don’t know how that contract sits. Was it a three-fight deal? I know Munguia is a DAZN fighter, so I’m not sure how that’ll play out with Golden Boy. We’ll see what plays out,” said Hearn to Fighthype last night, talking about the reports of Canelo vs. Munguia that could happen with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).
