Canelo Alvarez won’t fight David Benavidez because he doesn’t want to give the haters what they want. They want this fight, but the superstar Canelo isn’t going to give them the satisfaction of seeing him grant their wishes.
The haters want Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) to fight ‘The Mexican Monster’ Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) before he retires, and he wants to do the opposite to basically give them the finger.
The thrill of defiance
Canelo doesn’t want to please the haters, who dislike him and have never had anything good to say about him. They want to see the cruiserweight-sized 27-year-old Benavidez crush him to satisfy their hatred.
The haters want the ‘Face of Boxing’ Canelo brought to his knees by Benavidez so they can relish his demise.
“I don’t think it’s going to happen because Canelo has already accomplished everything,” said Robert Garcia to ESNEWS about his belief that Canelo Alvarez won’t fight David Benavidez at this stage of his career.
“Whatever people say, he’s accomplished more than any other Mexican has ever done. If he’s not the idol, the hero, the Chavez, and maybe he’s not going to be accepted ever. He’s already had so many great wins,” Robert continued about Canelo.
Slaying the cruiserweight-sized Benavidez won’t enhance Canelo’s legacy much at this point because he’s already done so much during his career.
It would mean something if Benavidez wasn’t perceived as a weight bully, a fighter who should be competing at cruiserweight but chooses to melt down to compete against smaller fighters at 168.
If Benavidez fought in his natural weight class, he’d have to fight killers like Jai Opetaia, and he wouldn’t last long with that guy.
No need for money
“He’s [Canelo] made more money than any Mexican has ever made in their life. He’s already investing his money,” said Robert. “He fights smart. He wins. He doesn’t go into wars. He doesn’t please the Mexican fans because he’s a smart man.”
Canelo’s fortune is estimated to be $200 million, and it’s going to continue to grow in the next few years.
Fighting Benavidez isn’t a pressing need for Alvarez because he’s got all the dough he’ll ever desire, so the motivation to make more dough isn’t there like it would for someone less prosperous.
“Giving all the people that talk about him. Giving all the haters. Doing that fight [Benavidez] is pleasing all those haters. So, he wants to do the opposite. ‘Bleep] you guys, I’m not going to show you guys that fight,'” said Robert.
“At this point, I think Benavidez pulls it out. I don’t see that fight happening. I don’t think it happens,” said Robert about his view that Benavidez likely beats Canelo.
“He can fight [David] Morrell at 168. That’s a huge fight,” said Robert about who Benavidez can face instead of Canelo. “In boxing, it would still be big.”
Benavidez doesn’t want to fight David Morrell, even though he holds the WBA super middleweight title. It would be great if he did want to fight him, but he doesn’t want to, and it’s pretty obvious why.
“He could also fight the winner of Beterbiev-Bivol, and he could beat them both too, I think,” said Robert about his view that Benavidez would defeat Beterbiev and Bivol.
