Gervonta Davis elevated, now WBA lightweight Champion, but will he keep it?

The WBA has reportedly elevated Gervonta Davis from ‘regular’ to ‘super’ lightweight champion due to the previous champ Devin Haney vacating the strap.

The WBA is doing away with the ‘regular’ belt, and there will be just one title with their organization at lightweight.

Tank Davis (29-0, 27 KOs), also known as Abdul Wahid, had held the less prestigious WBA secondary [AKA ‘regular’] lightweight title, which he was happy to hold.

The reluctant champion

Gervonta, 29, has already said he wasn’t interested in being elevated from his ‘regular’ WBA lightweight title to the full champion status.

Getting rid of the WBA title will free Tank Davis from having to pay sanctioning fees for the belt, and being stuck being forced to defend against mandatory challengers, who bring nothing to the table in terms of popularity that would drive PPV sales.

This lack of interest on the Baltimore native Tank Davis’ part suggests that he could quickly vacate the WBA 135-lb belt, and either go beltless or target one of the other three titles at light, IBF, WBC, or WBO.

With Tank’s popularity, he doesn’t require a title for him to continue to have a large following, as the fans in this generation don’t care much about titles, as that’s just hype junk that the promoters and networks talk about to validate a fighter to get people interested.

Belts not needed

Tank can literally focus on fighting the name guys, whether they have a title or not, and vacate any belts that he wins in a ‘catch & release’ type fishing maneuver, and the fans wouldn’t care. They just want to see Tank Davis fight, preferably against the best fighters, like these guys:

– Shakur Stevenson
– Devin Haney
– Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela
– Frank Martin
– Vasily Lomachenko
– Raymond Muratalla
– Subriel Matias
– Teofimo Lopez
– Ryan Garcia
– William Zepeda
– Edwin De Los Santos
– George Kambosos Jr.
– Floyd Schofield
– Keyshawn Davis
– Andy Cruz
– Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz
