David Morrell slams Benavidez vs. Andrade “clown circus”

By Sean Jones: David Morrell Jr. took to social media today to trash the “clown circus” fight between WBC interim WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez & Demetrius Andrade for failing to mention his name for their November 25th.

Morrell feels he should be fighting Benavidez & Andrade, but he’s being locked out and treated like he doesn’t exist. Benavidez’s fans don’t want him to fight Morrell, and it’s easy to see why. Morrell has better skills superior power, and a better all-around fighter overall.

Morrell called out Benavidez recently, but Mexican Monster’ & his dad, Jose Sr., wanted no part of fighting him, which some fans saw as a sign that they were afraid.

It’s possible that Morrell was deemed more trouble than he was worth because he’s less well-known than former world champions Andrade and Caleb Plant, even though he could likely beat both.

If Benavidez loses to the 25-year-old Morrell, he can forget about ever getting a shot against Canelo Alvarez.  Benavidez probably isn’t going to get the fight with Canelo anyway because he hasn’t earned it by fighting Morrell, and his resume is filled with too many fodder-level guys.

Benavidez’s ten-year boxing record features just one noteworthy opponent: Caleb Plant, and he nearly lost that fight. If the winner of the Benavidez-Andrade match fails to secure a bout with Canelo, they should face Morrell to determine the true #1 contender for Alvarez. This would establish the best fighter below Canelo and increase the fight’s overall significance.

Benavidez and Andrade have been mentioning Canelo Alvarez’s name as if they are going to fight him after their upcoming match next month on Showtime PPV. However, the winner of the Benavidez-Andrade fight does not have any chance of getting a shot at the undisputed super middleweight champion Alvarez.

It seems that Morrell is being treated similarly to Benavidez in terms of being ignored and left out by other fighters in his weight class. Even when discussing the top boxers in the 168-lb division, Morrell’s name is conspicuously absent. It appears that he is being ostracized by the established fighters in the division.

WBA ‘regular’ 168-lb champion Morrell Jr. (9-0, 8 KOs) doesn’t like the way he’s being ignored, even though he holds a world title and is viewed by many fans as the #2 guy in the division behind Canelo.

To increase his popularity, Morrell needs to fight as often as possible against the best available opponents. This is the formula that Gennadiy Golovkin used to become popular in a short period, and it works. However, it takes dedication as fighters cannot take breaks from training to go on vacation. If they want to fight six or more times a year, they must constantly be in the gym.

Morrell has only fought once this year when he stopped Falcao in the first round back in April. Prior to that, he defeated Aidos Yerbossynuly via twelfth-round knockout in November last year.

These knockout victories might have deterred many fighters who would have otherwise been interested in challenging him for his WBA secondary 168-pound belt.
