By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Eddy Reynoso says Canelo Alvarez will be targeting Jermall Charlo next after they face Jermell Charlo next month on September 30th on Showtime in Las Vegas.
Reynoso feels that the unbeaten WBC middleweight champion Jermall (32-0, 22 KOs), who hasn’t fought in 2+ years, is a good option for Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) to fight next after he takes care of the smaller Charlo, Jermell.
The boxing public hoped that the undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo would finally face his WBC 168-lb mandatory challenger David Benavidez because he’s already been waiting for two years for his title shot.
Fans losing out
Unfortunately, with Reynoso saying they want Jermall next, it means Benavidez will be out of luck. At this point, the Benavidez contest may never happen because if Canelo loses to Jermell, it would be pointless for that match-up to happen.
It’s questionable whether Jermall will be able to take the fight with Canelo next, as he’s not looked good in recent videos on Youtube. It’s unclear whether Jermall can make it through a training camp without falling apart because he’s not looked healthy and could suffer an injury.
Reynoso also said that a fight between Canelo and Terence Crawford wouldn’t happen. Even if Crawford comes all the way up to 168, which he said he won’t do, Reynoso says the fight won’t “materialize.”
With Crawford talking about wanting Canelo to come down to fight him at a catchweight, that’s obviously a non-starter right off the bat. Crawford showed his naivety with that comment because it’s never going to happen.
Canelo is a superstar, and he won’t be dictated to by a fighter that has only fought one big name [Errol Spence Jr.] in his entire 15-year career. Crawford needs to wake up and come to his senses because the only chance he has of getting a massive Canelo payday would be to fight him at 168 or 175.
Jermell, then Jermall
“It’s a great fight. People talk about the weight. What people don’t say is Canelo is coming from 147 lbs, and at that time, Charlo was already at 154 lbs,” said trainer Eddy Reynoso to Little Giant Boxing.
“What we’ve done is gone up in weight, but we’ve also gone down in weight as well. In the end, it’s going to be a great fight. It’s going to be a fight to remember for a long time,” Reynoso continued about the Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo fight.
“A fight between Mexicans vs. African Americans always delivers. The Charlos [Jermell & Jermall] are great fighters. More than anything, they’re managed and trained by one of the best trainers in boxing, a very disciplined Derrick James.
“We have two great sparring partners. Today, we did eight rounds of sparring, and the other day, we did ten. I think Canelo is acclimating very well to the altitude,” said Reynoso about the mountain training Canelo is doing to work on his conditioning for the fight against Charlo.
“It’s been a while since we’ve done a training camp at high altitude. Canelo is very focused, and you’re going to see a great Canelo for the Charlo fight.
“Yes, there’s going to be a press conference next week for the Charlo fight. The Canelo-Charlo tour is going to be a good one. First, we’re going to fight Jermell Charlo; then we’re going to go after Jermall.
“It’s a great fight,” said Reynoso about tonight’s contest between WBO super featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete & Oscar Valdez on ESPN. “Both are great fighters that like to go to war.
“It’s an even fight. Whoever clips who first will determine a lot. Both have gotten up from the canvas. It’s going to be a great fight.
“We’re training hard, and we know the fight is going to be complicated. We’re focused on the fight.
Reynoso rejects Canelo-Crawford
“I thought it was going to be a more competitive fight. In the end, Crawford’s skills definitely showed. Crawford’s level definitely showed against Spence. I think Spence has to come back from that fight. He didn’t show much. People say he was dehydrated.
“I think the weight difference is too much,” said Reynoso when told that Crawford wants to fight at 158. “I don’t think that fight will ever materialize. Yeah, but I don’t think Crawford would ever move up that much weight. He’s too small,” said Reynoso.
