Benavidez Sr says Jermell has “good chance to beat Canelo”

By Sean Jones: Jose Benavidez Sr. says he believes that Jermell Charlo has a “good chance” of defeating Canelo Alvarez on September 30th to dethrone the King of the 168-lb division to change the entire landscape.

Jose Benavidez needs to wake up and smell the coffee because Canelo is NOT going to be fighting his son, David, as part of his three-fight deal with PBC.

The cold bitter reality is David Benavidez doesn’t figure into Jermell Charlo’s plans if he comes out victorious against Canelo. Moreover, we’re already hearing that Canelo has his three fights planned out with PBC in this order:

1. Jermell Charlo
2. Jermall = brother’s revenge match
3. Errol Spence Jr

Either way, Benavidez Sr. feels that it’s a good thing for Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) to be signed with PBC, defending his undisputed super middleweight championship against the 154-lb Jermell (35-1-1, 19 KOss) because even if he loses, Jose Sr believes his son, David, will get a chance to fight Charlo for the four belts.

Benavidez Jr could be kidding himself because if Jermell beats Canelo, the two will likely be fighting a rematch. Canelo is NEVER going to fight the massive Benavidez, who some would argue is a weight bully and should be fighting at light heavyweight a long time ago.

There’s also talk of Jermell’s brother, Jermall, coming up from the 160-lb division to exact revenge, provided he’s dealt with his personal problems that have parked him on the side of the road for the past two years.

“Everybody’s surprised by the fights. Everybody was thinking it was the big brother. The 160 that was going to go to 168, but now we see it that is the 154 going to [fight Canelo] I don’t know what,” said Jose Benavidez Sr to Fighthype, reacting to Jermell Charlo fighting Canelo Alvarez on September 30th instead of Jermall Charlo.

“I’m super happy, man, to be honest with you. We [David Benavidez] keep trying, we keep training, and we got to be ready for the opportunities, and things are the way they are, and they’re going to be that way.

“We just got to stay ready, and we’re happy because it’s good for boxing. Canelo is with PBC now, so I’m happy about that because we’re on the best side right now [to finally get the fight against the Mexican star].

“Canelo coming over to PBC is going, in my opinion, to generate more money and it’s going to be more opportunities for a lot of our people that are with PBC.

“Of course, man,” said Benavidez Sr when asked if Jermell Charlo has a better chance of beating Canelo than his brother Jermall Charlo. “I was speaking to everybody here, and nobody was expecting that, but I feel good about it.

“Jermell has been active. I’m excited about this fight, to be honest with you. He’s a champion for a reason. He’s good, he’s still young, strong, and hungry, and I could probably say he has a pretty good chance to beat Canelo. If that happens, we’re on a different page,” said Benavidez Sr.
