By Ken Hissner: At the Toyota Arena, Ontario, California, Saturday over DAZN Oscar De La Hoya (Golden Boy Promotions) presented in the Main Event former WBO Lightweight champion Jaime Munguia won a majority decision over Sergiy “Technician Derevyanchenko with a last round knockdown for the vacant WBC Silver title.
In the Main Event former WBO Lt Middle champ Jaime Munguia, 42-0 (33), #169.4, of Tijuana, Baja California, MEX, won a majority decision over Sergiy “Technician” Derevyanchenko, 14-5 (10), #167.4, of Feodosia, Crimea, UKR and Brooklyn, NY, over 12 rounds, for the vacant WBC Silver title.
In the first round at the halfway point Derevyanchenko landed a right hurting Munguia driving him to the ropes. In the second round it was Munguia who rocked Derevyanchenko with a right on the chin halfway through the round. In the third round Derevyanchenko hurt Munguia with a right on the chin in the final minute. In the fourth round it was close with Munguia having an edge.
In the fifth round Derevyanchenko rocked Munguia halfway through the round with a right on the chin. In the sixth through the ninth rounds Derevyanchenko had an edge and hurting Munguia in the tenth round.
In the eleventh round Munguia came back well. In the twelfth and final round Munguia had Derevyanchenko down for an 8-count from referee Gerald White but couldn’t finish him.
Scores were 115-112, 114-113 and 114-114 and 115-113 Derevyanchenko KH.
In the co-feature Super Middle Shane Mosley, Jr., 19-4 (10), #160, of Las Vegas, NV, stopped D’Mitrius “Big Mitch” Ballard, 21-2-1 (13), #159 ¾, of Temple Hills, MD, at 1:42 of the seventh round of a scheduled 10 rounds, for the vacant WBO NABO Middle title.
In the second round a clash of heads that caused a short break by Referee Thomas Taylor. Mosley did enough to take the round. In the third round the fans started yelling for more action. In the fourth round it was the best round of the fight so far with Mosley having a slight edge. Ballard has had problems recovering from the head clash earlier but won the round.
In the fifth rounds final seconds a right from Mosley on the chin drove Ballard to the canvas for an 8-count from referee Taylor. In the sixth round Ballard came back well until the final seconds when Mosley finished strong.
In the seventh round Mosley had Ballard out on his feet and pulled his head down without a warning from referee Taylor. Mosley continued beating on Ballard who was helpless against the ropes when referee Taylor finally called a halt.
Former WBC Super Fly world champ now Super Bantam 43 year-old Mariana “Barbie” Juarez, 55-12-4 (19), #121 ¼, of Mexico City, Distrito Federal, MEX, lost to Mayeli Flores, 10-1-1 (3), #120 ¾, of Mexico City, Distrito Federal, MEX, over 10×2 rounds.
In the second round Flores hurt Juarez making her turn southpaw getting to the end of the round. In the fourth round Flores had Juarez hurt prior to the bell. The ring physician was brought in to check Juarez.
In the fifth round both had their moments. In the sixth round Flores had Juarez bleeding from the nose all over her face with blood almost stopping her. In the seventh round Juarez did enough to get through the round though losing it big. In the eighth and final round both let it all hang out to the bell as the former world champ and No. 4 contender who idolized her gave the fans plenty to cheer about. Referee Jack Reiss.
Scores were 80-72 and 79-73 twice as did KH.
Fly Ricardo “El Nino” Rafael Sandoval, 22-2 (16), #111 ½, of Rialto, CA, defeated Rocco “So Cal Kid” Santomauro, 22-2 (6), #111 ¼, of Apple Valley, CA, over 10 rounds.
In the first four rounds it was Sandoval having an edge. In the fifth through the seventh both had their moments. In the ninth round Santomauro came back well enough to outwork Sandoval. In the tenth and final round Santomauro did enough to take the round.
Scores were 98-92, 96-94 twice as did KH.
Referee was Ray Corona.
