By Ken Hissner: Saturdays SHOWTIME PPV 8 PM EST Main Event promoted by Tom Brown (TGB Promotions) and Oscar De La Hoya (Golden Boy Promotions) is between former IBF and WBA Super Featherweight, WBA Light Welterweight and current WBA World Lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis and former WBC Interim Lightweight champion Ryan ‘King Ry” Garcia has gotten a lot of publicity with both boxers going back and forth at each other.

It’s been this writer’s experience over the years that the more the opponents go at each other, the more dull the fight sometimes may be.

In Philadelphia back in May of 2015 for the vacant Pennsylvania Heavyweight title, Amir “Hard Core” Mansour, 21-1, and Joey “Tank” Dawejko, 14-3-2, were going at it for weeks leading up to the weigh-in. It ended up being a very average fight over ten rounds. Southpaw Mansour won by scores of 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94 at Philly’s 2300 Arena over ten dull rounds.

I can still remember one of the dullest heavyweight fights I had ever seen when IBF and WBA champion Anthony “AJ” Joshua, 20-0, defeated WBO champion Joseph Parker, 24-0, in Cardiff, Wales, in March of 2018. Joshua won 119-109 and 118-110 twice.

Davis, 28-0 with 26 knockouts, out of Baltimore, Maryland, who came in at #135, is a slight favorite, over Garcia, 23-0 with 19 knockouts, out of L.A., California, at #135 ½, at the T-Mobile Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Officials are the referee Thomas Taylor and judges Tim Cheatham, Dave Moretti, and Steve Weisfeld.

Both boxers are both talking about challenging WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO Lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney, 29-0, with 15 knockouts. On May 20th, Haney defends against former WBO Feather, WBO Super Feather, and WBO, WBA, and WBC Lightweight champion Vasyl “Loma” Lomachenko, 17-2 with 11 knockouts champion who, since losing his titles in 2020, has won three straight.

Haney last defended his titles in October after winning the title and in a rematch defeating George Kambosos, Jr., then 20-0 in the first one.

In the amateurs, Garcia fought Haney four times, with each winning twice. He also defeated top welterweight Victor Ortiz, Jr., and unbeaten super lightweight Brandun Lee, 28-0, with 23 knockouts. He was 215-15 in the amateurs.

Davis, on the other hand, was 205-15 in the amateurs. Three times he defeated Joet Gonzalez, now 26-3, Lamont Roach, 23-1-1, and Manny Robles lll, 18-1, in the amateurs.

‘I sacrificed for this fight. I’m going to break his jaw,” said Garcia. “I’m going to drown Ryan Garcia!” Big talk from both fighters, so let’s hope there’s not “MORE HYPE THAN FIGHT!”
